20 July

River Kennet - Newbury   1900 - 2330   Warm, overcast and breezy. River very low.   1 Chub; 2lb 7oz. 20+ Dace, 9 Roach.   5 Weeks into the season and not a hint of a barbel so far! At least there appears to be an abundance of silver fish in the river and a bonus chub provided a modicum of action on the ledger rod. No otter sightings this evening - just a family of mink - 4 of them rampaging along the far bank margins!

River Kennet - Bulls Lock   0700 - 0830   1 Perch; 1lb 6oz, 3 Dace, 1 Roach and a Grayling.   First time I've fished this bit of river - trotted a nice long glide which looks like its the sort of swim you can 'build up' - though I didn't really have enough maggot for that. Was hoping for a chub or 2 but quite happy with the perch.   River Kennet - Thatcham   0900 - 1100.   1 Chub; 3lb 6oz, 4 Dace, 3 Brownies to just on 1lb.   So having re-stocked with bait it was off to have a 2nd

Pallets Pool, Nr Newbury.   0445 - 0645   Warm (ish - for that time in the morning!)   20 rudd. 2 roach and a bleak!   Short session primarily to get a rudd for the IAC All Rounder Challenge though hopeful of a tench or bream. Pond was surprisingly busy with 4 anglers pegged out for the night. Lots of predator activity so somewhat surprised not to get a perch or two. No interest at all on the lead....

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1830 - 2130   Warm, muggy evening. River very low - looking rather threadbare!   6 Dace; 3 in the 6-8oz class. 1 Roach. 3 Brownies; biggest 1lb 5oz.   First trip to a swim Paul and I recce'd in the close season - an area we reckon held good trotting potential and good 'static' areas - particularly for near bank 'lowering'! The trotting lived up to expectations with some nice chunky dace and a couple of trout doing good imitatio

NAA Stillwater - Thatcham   1930 - 0500   Warm, overcast and still. No need of a shelter or brolly - could have sat in shirtsleeves all night if it wasn't for the mozzies. Super night to be out.   1 Crucian; 2lb 6oz. 5 Carp; 17lb 14oz, 16lb 0oz, 10lb 1oz, 9lb 5oz, 7lb 1oz. 1 Perch (small).   Love it when a plan actually comes off! One of the lake's crucians was always number one priority and I had one as soon as it got completely dark - should probably hav

River Kennet - Nr Thatcham   1830 - 2330   Warm , bright and breezy evening. River low   2doz Dace, 1 Roach, 1 Bleak.   Another evening blanking for barbel - but I at least had the compensation of finding a shed load of dace in the first hour. Switching to the lead thereafter - the only interest in the baits came from minnows and crayfish!

First time livebaiting

River Thames, Saturday 4th July 2015   This a was an experimental day, another trip to the ‘Drive In’ fishery to try out Kappa’s CD rig or at least my interpretation of it given what I had to hand (see here http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/7445162-perch-livebaiting-rig/).   The paternoster link to the weight sets the presentation depth so I though two feet off bottom in ten feet of water would be a good starting point, no real logic to this just a gut feeling that the nume

A new season is upon us

A bit of a marathon blog entry this but I always forget how much planning and organisation is needed when you intend to fish several different venues in a short space of time. I haven’t had time to write individual entries. One venue would need a bivvy and the kitchen sink, one would need waders, one maggots, one lobs, one trotting gear, one quivertip rods etc etc. and I still haven’t managed to squeeze in a tenching trip to Marsh Farm or a visit to Speen Moors.   Monday 15th June - River Tham

River Kennet - Nr. Thatcham   1830 - 2300   Warm, still evening. River low and looking rather threadbare after a dry spring (and a dry June)   2 Dace; 1 chunky one of 8oz, 1 Grayling (13oz) & 2 brownies - both circa 10oz - and possibly the same fish!   Start of what will probably a familiar pattern over the summer. A couple of hours trotting - ostensibly to try and get a float caught barbel - but in truth Rusty will spot the blank avoidance ruse, follo

NAA Stillwater - Widmead   1900 - 0700   Warm with a southerly breeze - very pleasant night to be out.   7 Carp; All over 5½lb. Best 2, 8lb 11oz & 8lb 7oz. 2 Roach. 4 Perch.   Biggest carp on float fished maggot around an hour after starting, all the others caught between 2200 - 0400 on the method feeder. Snailz Boilies beating Halibut Pellets 4-2 (I swapped baits every hour). Was hoping for a bream or even a tench to put in an appearance but still nic

5th June - The plan – A new month, a new target…not really!

One thing I am trying to achieve by including stuff about my cancer is to raise awareness of the disease. Like many of you readers, I too get a bit fed up at times with the amount of advertising on tv and radio about cancer as I believe over-exposure of any topic can lead to indifference. But I also believe that me writing about my experiences is coming in from a more real angle, and therefore more notice might be taken. That said, I know my friends will tell me if I am becoming boring!   The

Harris Lake, Marsh Farm Fishery, Milford.   1600 - 0700   Cool clear night, with bright sunshine before dusk and cloud building just after sunrise.   6 Crucians; 4 over 2lb - best 2lb 4oz. 5 Tench; Biggest 5lb 7oz. 4 Roach, 3 Perch, and a Gudgeon!   Mission accomplished. Paul and I both said, rather wistfully, that we'd like a 5lb + tinca and a 2lb + crucian to kick off the summer. The crucian part of that equation being the one we thought we might struggl

Barnes Lake 8.6.15

I last went to this large and attractive lake about 8 years ago. It is mainly a tench lake, but also used to have some quality rudd. The first time I went there were small rudd everywhere, but I also lost a couple of good ones. Then the next year I went it seemed dead and no-one was fishing. Maybe it was too early in the year? For better or worse I didn't go back, and today was intended as an exploratory visit.   3.30 - 6.30pm. The lake was full of weed, more so than I remember it. I started w

22nd May - The plan – Another attempt to get a crucian

Having failed to catch a crucian carp during my previous visit of just under two weeks ago, I was sure this outing would be more successful. After all, Marsh Farm, Harris Lake, as per the web site, “famous for crucian carp”, and having caught nearly a hundred of them last season, my last outing must surely have just been a blip on my success rate.   To further increase the odds in my favour, I was here for the night, and the hours of darkness are usually guaranteed to bring a crucian or two on

Different lake same result....

NAA Stillwater, Pallets, Monday 25th May 2015.   …….no silvers! Is it really too much to ask to spend a day fishing just catching small fish on a club water? It seems so because today I tried a previously unfished venue known to contain lots of small rudd. My plan was to fish maggot on the float and see if any reasonable examples came along, nothing too scientific or ambitious. Clearly the angling gods frowned upon my idea for despite being reassured by a couple of anglers I spoke to yesterday

Nice lake roach 22.5.15

Ladygrove Lake, Didcot 2-5pm This lake has some nice roach, but my last 2 sessions with caster and then hemp and tares failed to get through the small roach and ubiquitous skimmer bream. Put on a small bait and a small roach gets it; a bigger bait, and it is immediately gobbled by a skimmer bream, anything up to 3 lbs. I baited lightly with 3mm pellets and hemp, with hook bait alternating between 5mm soft pellet and sweetcorn. I noticed that the pellets were getting even more bream than the sw

9th May - The plan – Contemplation and crucians

Signs to me that spring has properly arrived are seeing the first bluebells, the hearing of the first cuckoo, and the first outing after crucians. The bluebells hadn’t let the side down, stunning displays in the woods around Aldworth, Berkshire, well worth a visit, and don’t miss out The Bell in Aldworth itself, my favourite pub of all time!     The cuckoo listening had also been successful, so two out of three so far, signs were positive, now all I needed was a crucian.   The weather had

A bamboo PB!

NAA Stillwater, Warwicks, Sunday 17th May 2015.   Another foray into fishing lakes. I had planned to visit the vintage tackle fair at Redditch today but a change of plan meant that I was in Devon over the weekend and couldn’t really arrange things to be at the fair early. Probably just as well, last time I went to one of these events (my first) I took plastic naively thinking that I’d be able to buy stuff, no chance, it was cash or no sale. So this time I had cash and it was burning a big hole

I couldn't help it, the temptation was too strong.

NAA Stillwater, Warwicks, May Bank Holiday Weekend.   Sunday 3rd May 2015   I don’t often fish during the closed season but there are times when I fancy going back to basics with just a pot of maggots a float rod and a lethargic chill by a lake, just as I used to when I was a teenager. These days I’m lucky enough to be doing that with a rather nice split cane rod and since said rod has proven to be not ideal for trotting I needed to find out what it was good at. With Steve Walker’s wise word
