  1. Yeah I'm the same £3 a pint use to get them at £2 a pint where I use to live 25kg scretting pellets I pick up for £27 or a bit of back door dealing I get a bag once a month for free and being a chef sweet corn is free. However I do love fishing with maggots and will quite often buy a gallon I believe that a lot of people forget the natural baits maybe primarily cause of cost
  2. I maybe wrong but are these barble rods?? Nothing wrong with painting any tip or tipex works well
  3. I'm a big believer in moving around its too easy to go with what you know. by moving round learning new things will make u a better angler. And take what you've learnt to your lake might help you catch even more fish also it's not always about catching carp after carp I get more of a thrill if I go on a commercial and for example target chub and catch a net full of chub. Get on that Trent! yes u won't be catching big fish all day but 1 3lb tench will have you talking bout it for years
  4. As a match angler myself I can pretty much guarantee nearly every fishery I go to I open a tin of corn but only use a third of it at most so guaranteed lots of Corn has been thrown in the edges I agree with Adams set up just plop ur float a foot from the bank to your left or right in a peg and just drop feed pieces of corn and fish double corn hair rigged on a 14-12 hook I use quick stop hairs and have been Having great results with that tactic in the evenings you will catch anything that is there with corn
  5. Yes it's a brilliant idea after a match finishes all the anglers chuck there leftover bait in the margins hence that's why it's a perfect time of day to just fish your margins or just 1 rod length out all the big fish move in
  6. Www.dragoncarpdirect.com are doing maver rod and reel combo for 34.99 my mate just got one brilliant rod very light but excellent fun playing big carp and will be perfect for mixed silvers
  7. I went with the in laws for a day and just took a little telescopic rod with 4lb line and you can buy maggots out the vending machines all round the broads and just sat catching roach of the back of the boat for a hour if your moored up theres no reason after feeding a swim long enough that u can't hit into some bream and skimmers
  8. Dave clipping your line won't damage your line as long as your casting right. I don't want to teach u to suck eggs however I do see people on the bank casting wrong which would cause the line to snap at the clip, when casting after you release your finger from the line bring the rod back to a vertical position when it reaches the line clip the feeder will tighten the line and your rod tip will cushion the fall of the feeder into the water this is 2 fold the line will be tight (no bow) and also the hook length will land flat in the water so no wrapping round your feeder this is called feathering. Again I sincerely apologise if I'm sounding patronising
  9. I personally would start by fishing a lot smaller and lighter 4lb hook length to maybe 6lb line most with a size 14 hook. I would use a open end cage feeder with a black particle ground bait I would plug one end of the feeder with the ground bait fill the middle with chopped worm and castor then plug the top with ground bait I would cast this out maybe 5-10 times line clipped to exactly the same spot to lay a bed of food down for the bream so they can get there heads down rummaging for food. I would leave this for 15 mins then go over it with half a worm and double maggot cocktail on the hook. As for the tench I would fish 4-5 rod lengths with a float. fish over depth and spray corn and pellet and fish a size 14 quick stop hair rig with double corn. This is how I would fish the venue without knowing it
  10. Tackleuk Preston Innovations Hooklength Box ByTackleUK17,100 views Check this out on YouTube tommy will show you how it's done
  11. Preston hard case rig wallet you have the choice to make several different size links or just get 2 pins on a piece of card measured out 4" tie the hook on place it round the pin then loop the line round the other pin and pinch it then tie your double knot???
  12. If the plan is to get into pole fishing then getting a elasticated whip would be best an eyed whip is only really good for catching small fish on the likes of a canal and this won't show u the basics of pole fishing Hope this helps Stu
  13. I love my Abu Garcia "enticer" 10ft with 3 tips brilliant for fishing for roach at distance on a river see every bite or knock and even better to hit a carp on it on the fishery get a right good end in the rod I picked mine up for bout £35 7 years ago think they might be bit more these days
  14. As above depends how I'm fishing method feeder I would use a 4" hook length fishing with a bomb I would be closer to 9" a waggler for chub could be anything from 12" up to 35" my pole rigs are all the same at 12cm just different size lines. Ill explain the reasons behind my thinking a method feeder is easy you need a short length due to the fish hook themselves against the weight of the method I use 4" because a lot of fisheries you have to adhere to no smaller then that so I just use that standard I couldn't tell you the amount of times I've told people to stop striking when using a method that's what destroys the fish ripping there lips off. When using my bomb its usually cause fish are shying away from the method feeder so hence a longer link is common sense When on my waggler for chub this is just my preference the fish will watch the bait flow through the water so ill attach my float just below a swivel which I then put my hook length right to the deck depending if up in the water or not And my pole rigs is simple I use a small preston box to tye all my hook links so there the same length so a bent hook or snapped link just quick hook link change I don't have to re plummet ideal for matches.
  15. I think it's a brilliant idea a whip would be perfect with pint of maggots/pinkies. You could always find your local fishery some of them have small stock ponds they allow you to take youngsters on pretty much guaranteed to catch if he enjoys it enough then progress him onto rod and reel and show him the different forms of fishing and let him choose his own route how he would like to progress weather it be fishing matches or rivers for barbel/chub or if he wants bigger the better and go for specimen fish or even carp. I know as a kid I started out on rivers feeder fishing or trotting for roach or perch basically anything that swam now I like to be catching constantly so the match fishing style appears to me most
  16. As my name suggests I'm a chef and have used many a item from work when I was in Ireland fishing for bream rule of thumb was sweet for summer spice for winter so many a time added strawberry or chocolate ice cream topping to my groundbait or even my hemp and turmeric or ground nutmeg in the winter. Also adding turmeric to your maggots works well two fold makes them sink fast and also flavouring can sometimes bring on a much needed bite.
  17. Hard to tell without seeing it however you do realise that you should leave about a inch of the stick part of the bung pertruding from the bottom of your top kit??
  18. can anyone tell me of any matches that are on this friday 29th july i live in wiltshire so anywhere not to far away???
  19. prawns is a very good suggestion that has been used before on a venue ive fished and the bloke who used it was bagging up every week and kept it a big secret. Worms are a very good bait the venue im fishing at the min is what is catching cause the fish havent fully spawned and are a bit stand offish of the pellet and usual baits however loving the worm and if the carp arent having it at all u will allways get a good bag of bream and silvers which could quite easily win the match. if you want to try a bait which doesnt allways get used on a venue then its got to be paste if you can be arsed to master it can be dynamite on the right venue!
  20. I have allready spent many a night dreaming of the van you are talking about and i would love to quit work for the year and do the great rod race as done on tv with matt hayes. or the other option is to spend the year travelling up and down the country fishing open matches every day of the week till im good enough to make a full time living out of it then that would be my life however just need to fish 2-3 matches a week to pay the bills obviously win whiteacres and fish-o every year lol

    chub?

this looks brill cheers to all for the advice dont know bout venturing up to chippenham as ive got this stretch on my ticket and want to crack it as its just down the road ideal for the odd evening for a few hours. Im a chef so i can get bread in abundance at all diffrent stages plus i can put it in the hot cupboard to dry it out to help me cheers again all
  22. I remember years ago reading one of my dads old fishing books and this was mentioned that during medival times they use to hang dead carcasses from trees like commented above however a modern day version is to get a old bucket with a couple of small holes through it then fill with maggots just to allow 3/4 maggots just drip into the river/lake its something ive allways said i would do if i ever got the cahnce to buy a house on some water apparently if you just continue doing this eventually after a few days this will become a bit of a holding spot for fish because they come to belive its a natural feeding spot however using maggots consistently like this will cost you a small fortune just to catch some fish unless your plan is to go for a record breaking barbel which i belive this would be a good method for without spooking them when you eventually cast in>>
  23. Easiest way is the night before u go fishing put ur pellets in a bait box and just cover them in boiling water leave over night then just mix it into a smooth paste this method gives u a good consistency for any paste fishing margins out front basically anywhere. groundbait paste is also a lethal bait at the right venues just get tour bait box add a pole cub of water then add a pole cup of green swimstim groundbait then just swirl your bait box round in a circular movement till it binds then peels off from the sides and forms 1 large ball then just leave to 1 side while you set up the rest of your tackle this paste is very slack its designed to ship out in a kinder pot and tip it out where your fishing best if your only up to 6-7 sections can be longer however due to the slackness of the paste comes of the hook very easy and you can end up spending to much time shipping in and out.

    chub?

Hi all havent been on here for a couple of years need some help? Ive spent far to long fishing matches on commercial waters and need to get back into some natural waters. just got back from a afternoon/early evening fishing on the avon at christian malford in wiltshire i went down for a bit of free fishing and use up my maggots and worm from a recent match went with the intention of fishing the maggot feeder for chub however it was very weedy so really struggled to get any chub action as they were there when i set up and by the time i snagged up twice i had spooked them all away then my following mistake was i had taken my float box out of my tackle box prior to a previous match so had to just make doo feeder fishing picked up plenty of perch on the worm which was enjoyable and a couple of small chub of 12oz-1lb. 1st question is how would people fish in such weedy conditions? 2nd what bait? I cant afford to be forking out for 6 pints of maggots everytime i want to go for a little bit of a pleasure fish so i was thinking bread but i could really do with some knowledge on how i would go about doing this. Also this is apparently a well known barbel stretch which according to the bailiff are not there at the min however ive never caught a wild barbel and it has allways been a ambition of mine so any tips and advice on this such as what time of year would it be good for me to start fishing for them and what baits again any awnsers on any of these questions would be highly appreciated or even if some1 on here fishes this stretch and would allow me to come watch them for a session yours sincerly stu
  25. uve been given good advice u are ishing the good end of the resevoir so method u want to be going 30 yards out same as the pellet waggler u could do with big pellets like 10mm haired on the method. fish shallow wih the waggler and fire 10mm pellets over feed ur pole line caue if the fish are having it u will get on all these methods if there not having it this is usually when they are shying off the method so just fish a bomb with a 10mm pellet and fire pellets over be prepared to lose bombs though cause they get snagged in the rocks on the deck.
