  1. Having read the whole article, it makes a lot of sense to me, apart from the Angling Trust selling fishing licences, or any suggestion they have control over waterways, or environmental issues.
  2. Ahhh, the Monty Python Argument Sketch, pure magic, thanks n4lly. So as not to be accused of derailment, I would comment that there are not, in my humble opinion, as many large mullet in the harbours in my area (Folkestone, Dover, Rye), as I have observed in previous years.
  3. Thanks for the suggestion, but that box is already unchecked. I think its all part of Google's desire to take over the world. Having looked around the Net, one option suggested is to go to My Google Account>click on "Edit" next to "My Products" and delete the "Search history cache". When I follow this route, I get as far as clicking on "Edit" and get two options. First is "Delete product, Remove GMail permanently", second is, "Delete account, close account and deleyte all services and information". Its possible that the "Search history cache" is in the second option, but I am wary on clicking on this option in case it just deletes the account, rather than giving me a choice of which bits of the account to delete. This look like something I am just going to have to put up with.
  4. On my Google Home page under Settings there is not an "Auto Complete" option. The nearest it gets is "Google Instant" and I have checked "Do not use Google Instant". It still makes the aforementioned suggestions.
  5. My PC wants to help me fill in every box that appears on the screen. I am use to Google keep making suggestions on what I should be searching for, after I type one letter, but now Mozilla Firefox seems to be doing the same thing. Any suggestions as to how I can stop this happening please ? I know its not the end of the world, but its starting to get more than a little irritating.
  6. I actually don't mind paying for the air to check my tyres. It means that the equipment is maintained in good order and actually works, also the pressure stated is accurate (checked with my own tyre pressure gauge).
  7. You might be surprised how many people do read books throughout the year. Looking back I have purchased 26 books so far this year (between my wife and I) and go to the Library on a monthly basis and always take out 4 or 5 books. Both our daughters are avid readers and many of our friends. All those I have spoken to have no interest in the Kindle concept and prefer to read/own/lend/borrow a real book.
  8. I was fishing the west coast of Ireland last week and the telephone wires were smothered with swallows. Back here in Kent they don't seem to be gathering in big numbers yet.
  9. If its "just" a rod ring, your local tackle shop should be able to either fit it for you, or recommend someone local.
  10. I saw the title of this thread and guessed there would be a few "sniggering" posts. As sportsmen (and women) aren't we supposed to respect our quarry and treat it in a humane way ? Whats wrong with anglers showing their respect, I can understand why they chose to be there.
  11. You are going to have a great time, I also look forward to reading your blog.
  12. I will definitely not be buying anything from HP again. Has anyone had any experience of this Internet Security System (I am getting rid of AVG) ? http://internet-security-suite-review.topt...ity-review.html
  13. I have found out what the problem is, its my AVG Firewall. Despite Windows and HP Systems being on automatic update and noted on the Firewall settings, it is blocking them. I activated my Microsoft Firewall, turned off AVG Firewall and updated Windows XP and HP Systems in about 40 minutes. This is not the first time that AVG Internet Security has interfered with my PC.
  14. I did the "chkdsk /f" and all seemed OK. This morning I get the notification box from HP that I have updates available, the detail was a Security Update and a Program Update. I pressed the "proceed" button and the box now shows that I am unloading Security Update 0/319488. Once again, although its been "downloading" for 30 minutes there is no movement on the progress bar. It is infuriating that HP will not respond to my questions, just because the Hardware is out of its warranty period. I don't consider this is necessarily a Hardware problem. Needless to say i will not be buying anything form HP in the future. EDIT NOTE: I cancelled the Security Update and selected the Program Update only. This started downloading and the box showed "downloading 0/2545408". Now that is an awful lot of updates I appear to have missed. Curiouser and curiouser.
  15. Thanks for that, I will give it a try.
  16. Newt, I am running Windows XP and I rebooted the PC at midnight last night when it was still running (14 hours). When the PC restarted no HP Update box appeared. I then shut the PC down. When I started it this morning no HP Update box appeared. In All Programs I went to the HP drop down menu and clicked on Updates. It searched for updates and found one "Security Update" "Size 319.5 KB Time 0.6sec". When I selected this I got the same box as before showing, "downloading 0/319488". I let the PC chunter away for 30 mins and then cancelled the download.
  17. This update is still running, that about 9.5 hours.
  18. I have a Hewlitt Packard Pavilion desktop PC and occasionally get "Security Update". I get a notification and click to download, the usual download box appears and it starts downloading. The strange thing is it starts downloading and todays box says " downloading 0/319488". The download started at 10.45am and its still downloading (almost 6 hours later), but the download box still says "downloading 0/319488". There is no progress line showing, the download is showing on my Task Manager and the PC is chuntering away. Do any other HP users experience this ? As the PC is out of warranty HP referred me to their users Forum, which isn't used much and nobody has responded to my question there.
  19. I don't think many anglers in the US (unless they are staunch Republicans - cue Newt ) take much notice of what is Anti Obama political rhetoric, rather than a fair representation of the facts.
  20. Before asking the question on here I did email AVG Tech Advice, but despaired of getting a reply. This morning I received a reply (7 days later), its a pity I don't understand half of it and would probably blow up my PC if I tried the half I do understand ( albeit vaguely). "Dear Sir/Madam, thank you for your email. We are ready to help you with solving any issues with AVG and we would welcome your cooperation in order to find the cause of the reported issue. With regards to your concern, we would like to ask you for some additional information, that will help us in finding cause of the issue. Please describe the behavior in more detail: 1. Is there an AVG test running at the time the slowdown is apparent (open AVG User Interface and check if there is running test displayed in the left part of the screen)? 2. Please open Windows Task Manager (shortcut CTRL+SHIFT+ESC, or right-click on the Windows tray), switch to tab Processes and sort the list by CPU usage (click on "CPU" header). Which processes are using the most CPU? 3. During which activities do you observe the slowdown (going through your files, browsing Internet, etc.)? 4. Does disabling of some components change the situation? Please disable only one component at time and check whether the slowdown still occurs: - Resident Shield (double-click on Resident Shield component in AVG and un-tick the option "Resident shield is active" -> Save changes). - Web Shield (double-click on this component and un-tick "Enable Web Shield" -> Save changes). - Link Scanner (double-click on Link Scanner and un-tick all options -> Save changes). - Firewall (double-click on Firewall and select "Firewall is disabled" -> Save changes). - Do you use any other Anti-Virus or security product on your computer? 5. Please answer this e-mail using the attached 'runner' file: - Save the attached "runner.avgdx" file to your computer (you can choose the location, however we recommend to use your "Desktop"). - Launch the saved file by double-clicking on its colored icon and the "AVG Diagnostics" tool will start automatically. - Enter your e-mail address and a detailed issue description into the appropriate areas. - Click on the "Diagnose and send results" button. We will receive the data and contact you back with further information. Thank you for your cooperation. It is appreciated. Best regards, Ali Akbar Che Yahya AVG Customer Services "
  21. Unfortunately, having paid for my AVG I am now wedded to it for the duration of the contract. My miserly tendencies will not permit me to walk away from something I have paid for. I will disable the link scanner and see if that improves things.
  22. Well, the culprit is avgnsx.exe and it was using 489,090k CPU. This is obviously part of my Anti Virus and I assume its updating. If so, there has got to be a better way than my PC grinding to a halt and strangely, it disengages the AVG Firewall and I get the Microsoft Security warning.
  23. Thank you gentlemen, much appreciated, as usual.
  24. Sometimes whilst I am browsing and operating no other tasks, my PC will start "working" furiously, this slows down my browsing and I have no idea what its doing. Occasionally, I get "not responding" problems when I navigate around and have to "end now" to clear things. I firstly assumed it was auto updating, but sometimes it goes on for ages, its definitely not performing any scheduled scans. I have tried "Ctrl-Alt-Del", but that doesn't tell me much, just what processes are active. I have also run AdAware after this happens and found nothing, so its not some virus type of activity. Is there some way that I can find out what my PC is doing ?
  25. Installshield is a misnomer for an updating software programme that either comes with the PC or invites itself on to your PC. It does not show in the Add/Remove programme list, which is why you have to go look for it. Thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a try.
