  1. Do you feed the bread via the cage feeder or ball it? Also will feeding bread ruin or help with trotting for the grayling if the roach arent having it or is it better to move on and only feed maggots for the grayling ? when quivering how long would you give each swim before moving on ? Is it worth spending any time trying to target the barbel or is it just as well to fish for the grayling and chub and maybe get a bonus barbel ? Sorry with all the questions but im a stillwater matchman and need all the advice i can get as this is totally alien to me
  2. Have just finished making a perfect 506 out of all the best bits off of 4 other 506s and swapping bits around and giving it a good clean and service and put the anti reverse pawl back in and now the clutch is something that i can trust as it now works with smoothness and accuracy , i didnt realise just how good these reels are and given a good service they all perform so sweet . They are far better than my newer 704 model and the line comes out without any snagging whatsoever really smooth , it sounds better as well and the bell sound is crisp when i press the bail They are ready for the itchen saturday and i cant wait
  3. This might help, but even these people dont have opal fruits or marathons http://www.oldfashioned-sweets.co.uk/index.php/ But heres abit of nostalgia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GSyLNofb0c...feature=related This is a nice compilation of memories, i was trying recently to remember my favourite drink as a kid and it makes a brief appearance here , quattro , also treets ( chocolate covered peanuts) i think there called reeses pieces now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GSyLNofb0c...feature=related
  4. Absolutely amazing fish and a great deal of watercraft going into catching them What river were these from ?
  5. There is the perfect day ticket fishery only 500yrds from my house and it fits every bill , it is peacefull and very secluded and the swims are very spaced and you dont see your neighbours , it has a lovely bridge you walk across to an island tackle and bait shop , the owner once he gets to know you just locks up the shop in the afternoon and leaves you to fish until you want to go . The natural 200 year old estate lake is naturally sustained with quality tench and massive crucians ( a record will come from this water ) lovely rudd and skimmers and a few nice bream and the only stocked fish are carp which will leave you alone if you dont target them. There are no bait restrictions and the owner will let you use a keepnet once you get to know him a bit and if there isnt anyone around . People enjoy fly fishing for the carp off of the long bridge and around the shop . There are rushes and lily beds all around and a quarter of the lake hasnt got any swims and the water just disappears into the woods . Sounds to good to be true doesnt it , but it exists and all for 7 pounds a day or 20 for 24 hours . http://www.lakeview-fisheries.co.uk/intro.html Now the bad bit I went there 2 days ago to have a walk around and to my horror was told by the bailiff that the owner who i know fairly well is in the final stages of selling up , he did give me warning last year and offered it to me at a great price considering it comes with a 6 bedroom bungelow , and i have recently been giving it much thought but came to a conclusion that i couldnt really afford it without having to borrow too much from my mum . The worst bit now The potential buyer is gonna close it to the public and only let his son who is a proffesional carp angler practice on it Its a real shame that another precious water is being lost to us all , but the sale hasnt gone through yet so there is a slim hope , the other annoying thing is that according to the bailiff it is being sold for 400k more than what it was originally offered to me for , i know i shouldnt believe all that im told and i will find out the whole story from the owner shortly . Its still open at the moment and im gonna try and make the most of it while i can , maybe even arrange a match on there if anyones interested? and if im allowed
  6. If its only half an acre then you wouldnt get many pegs out of it for the matches , however it may still be the best way to go to get the best out of it financially . bit small thou
  7. I wouldnt worry about it for a second as it takes an amazing amount of pressure to break a carbon rod and these rods have a good write up from what ive heard and are designed for the job. Ive only ever witnessed one rod breaking and im fishing matches at least once a week with 30 or more anglers and for a rod to break it must have had a weakspot from not being looked after , on the other hand thou theres always a loud noise somewhere on the lake from a pole section being broke and always followed by loud swearing
  8. That is a great bit of advice and i cant believe ive never thought about it myself and definitly something im gonna do when pleasure fishing for larger sized carp because it means that i dont have to use heavier lines to avoid being smashed which is better for presentation . I dont get smashed up often enough for this idea to warrant taking the extra time to do in matches but its got me thinking that it would be an advantage in some winter situations where i need to get a pva or pellet cone into a tight feeding area because i can use lighter lines and get more bites and with bites being so slow in winter theres no need to rush things anyway as 1 or 2 decent fish can win a match. It never ceases to amaze me this sport because you think youve thought of everything and then you hear something that changes things for you and makes you realise that its a never ending learning curve and someone out there is always gonna be doing something that you can learn from and take advice off . It still amazes me when non anglers say that fishing is down to luck
  9. I think your the man to ask Im gonna be building a large wooden garage in a couple of weeks and ive been thinking about ways i can tinker on my vehicles and any new projects that might come along, The ceiling is gonna be 2.2m high so i dont think its worth buying an electric ramp like the one in your picture as it would only be able to go up about 4 or 5 feet , also i dont want to dig a pit if i can help it . Whats a way that i can get access to the underneath of vehicles so i can work kneeling down.? I like that workshop youve got , perfect that is
  10. Just looked at the abu,s and it was the 506s that have had the pawl taken out . Do you know if i can use a light braid on these reels ?
  11. I agree, normarks have always had a lovely deep finish to their blanks with that carbon halo pattern shining throu , lovely rods. Nearly forgot about my normark neo 13ft method feeder which is great when i need a powerfull rod for casting out heavier feeders on larger stillwaters , but it doesnt have that lovely deep carbon finish to it like normarks of old , still a good rod thou and i wouldnt swap it for anything else for big waters with bigger carp
  12. I love normarks as well and i have the titan 1000 but to be honest i do prefere my daiwa spectron 13ft float rod with v tech joins and fuli alconite guides, superb rod I only wish i had kept my late fathers collection of normarks, but theres just no knowing what somethings gonna be worth 20 years or more later. I still kept 1 other normark of his as it was one that he cherished , his normark fast feeder 11,6
  13. Guru drag line mono for reel
  14. Could be the 506 then as ive got all of them up to the 704 , dont see the need to have the 706 as im sure theres not much difference to the 704 althou ive not really looked in to this so might be wrong
  15. Only another one million one hundred thousand one hundred and eleven miles to go and you can have a seven on the end or 1111111 is easier
  16. I was brought up on abu 501s and my dad always took the anti reverse pawl out and i learnt to play fish using my middle finger but that was years ago now so i hope i soon get to grips with it sunday. that was also when clutches werent the best and using light lines you need to have control you can trust .
  17. Me too im always adjusting it up to netting the fish , in matches its different thou and in summer in particular i want to get them in fast and i feel that ive got more control using the clutch , thats not to say i just wind them in on heavy lines thou , the heaviest hooklength i use is 0.18mm on the method in summer , ive landed an 18lber on 0.12 and as long as your using the clutch well and using a balanced rod and keeping a good bend in it it s no propblem. so far then its a 50/50 divide which means it really boils down to personal preference and what the angler has been used to doing
  18. I always nowdays play carp on the clutch with my baby shimano baitrunner 2500dl but after my match saturday i got talking to everyone and most say they backwind and i find this hazerdous . Ive had experiences in the past with reel tangles if i havent been fast enough or not looking for a second when the reel starts spinning . Some of them were saying that as soon as they hook the fish they dissengage the clutch and start backwinding which i find mad. Ive also found in the past that once a carp charges off and you start backwinding that you simply cant keep up and either let go and use your finger to dampen the freeflow or end up breaking off. Also once ive hooked a carp i want to try and get as many turns on the reel as i can get especially when im clipped up and then let the clutch do its job. I find the clutch slows down there runs faster as it keeps an optimal pressure and smoothness on the fish and tires them a lot quicker , much the same as the elastic does on the pole. whats the opinion on this or is it a case of what your used to or prefer doing ?
  19. Clown fish Crows foot elastic connection
  20. It has to be my daiwa spectron 13ft match rod as thats the longest rod ive got , its also extremely light and has fuji alconite guides so sounds like that will be my best bet . Ive hardly used this rod in the 4 years ive had it so im looking forward to putting a decent bend in it ( hopefully ) Cheers
  21. Cemex angling Chublet Cone feeder Cornmeal Cypry ( shakespear reel model ) Clip Candle float Conger eel Carpa chimp ( pole float) Cyprinus carpio Copykat ( yorkshire baits )
  22. I managed to get out and have a couple of hours on the tiny river mole at horley and its the first time in nearly 20 years that ive done this kind of fishing and im glad no one was around to witness my antics i got tangled in some brambles , then caught up a tree , but got the feeling back for it after a while and was so happy to catch a 2lb chub , it wasnt in the best condition thou and looked like it had been caught a million times so i didnt exactly feel like it was down to any technique on my part , but it was just nice to get out today and put those tangles and bad casts out the way before next week. Can anyone tell me what floats to bring to the itchen as today all i could use to get any decent presentation in the flow was a 3g carp pellet waggler float and i dont want to be seen using that next week Im guessing 4lb mainline on an abu 501 to a 3lb bottom will be alright line & reel wise ? Still unsure on what rod would be suitable for trotting so any advice as to what properties it needs to have ie do the eyes want to be slightly bigger so the line flows throu better etc ? , ive got a good selection of match float and feeder rods old and new so hopefully ive got something suitable . Thanks everyone as i need all the help i can get with this style of fishing .
  23. Ive been thinking of doing a bit of filming throu a 5 hour fishing match , there have been loads of other fishing videos done but none of them are very informative from the ones ive seen and i would like to explain exactly what im doing and show how to make the rigs and prepare the baits etc I would definitly take a look at your site because most of my matches are carp based and it would be interesting seeing how they respond to different baits and feeding techniques .
  24. I had a good match today at sumners lakes coming 2nd with 8 carp up to 10lb all caught on the method feeder on a cold hard day for a total of 48lb , i would have won but lost 2 big carp in the last half hour ( gutted ) What i did was emptied a bag of dynamite baits 3mm carp pellets into a bowl and covered with water for 3 minutes then drained , then i poured in half a small 75cl bottle of red food colouring and mixed well and the pellets take on a good deep red colour. Hookbait was a hair rigged single hi vis 8mm pink boilie which i buried in the pellets squeezed around a small elasticated guru method feeder and punched out about 40 yards I stuck at this pretty much the whole match as everything else i tried wasnt working and one of which was cupping in a bed of pellets and sweetcorn on one of my pole lines in which i didnt get a bite. If you want to what you can do if youve got free room around you is to put in what i call an all or nothing line where you put a good bed of whatever feed you fancy on the day down ie hemp etc, but make sure its over to the far left or right of your swim , then see if you can catch over it and if you dont then theres no harm done as you can always fish more sensibly out in front of you. In my opinion as others the water is still just to cold to get the fish going mad over a bed of feed and 9 times out of 10 you will just kill the swim for the day.
