Do you manage to avoid the minnows Chris or just not include them? I caught around 10 minnows to every other fish yesterday evening at Brimpton
  2. Whilst browsing internet forums recently I seem to remember a possible sighting of one in the Severn, will try to find it again!
  3. It wasn't very well advertised, knew absolutely nothing about it! Never seen many people fish that part of the free stretch although it is rumoured to hold some large chub
  4. Some good things to look forward to there! Exploring a bit more of Speen moors has got me looking forward to cooler weather and hunting out the chub for a few hours after work
  5. Totally agreed, budgie sold me a Leeds a few years ago, best money I've spent on fishing tackle
  6. Had quite a few gudgeon (some pretty chunky ones!) A small roach and a chub just shy of 3lb as it started to get dark (my biggest fish from Speen so far ), was going to fish on but didnt have my head torch Love that picture Chris! Will put a couple on I took the other morning when I find my laptop
  7. Cheers steve I was a bit worried how he was going to be but he took it all in his stride, got him his bike with monkeys on it Couldn't sleep Thursday night so I found myself at Speen moors around 5ish Friday morning with the quivertip and a few slices of bread, missed a few bites and caught a few crayfish. Speen Moors is a lovely place to be as the sun comes up!
  8. That sounds good to me is that on the club book you mentioned the other day? Sleep will be minimum when she's born with work, starting my course and fishing! Wills birthday is coming up on sunday, he's specifically told me he wants a bike and it has to have monkeys on it! Had a wonder round Speen moors this evening, found a few swims I had never even seen that look fairly promising for a chub or two
  9. First place I looked John, 20p and a half chewed sweet was all I found!
  10. My enthusiasm for fishing that is, I've had plenty of opportunities to fish lately (every evening this week is free for once!) I just can't seem to be bothered to go, maybe it's a run of poor sessions that's done it. Normally I would find myself sneaking out of work a bit early when I was off fishing but even my last session I went home and had dinner before heading out. Maybe I need a new challenge, my quest for summer barbel has left me well and truly deflated with not a single one landed despite fishing for them continuously since opening day! I have no interest whatsoever in catching Carp from lakes despite that being the 'easy' option. Possibly roach from the canal or river although I do not know the first thing about targetting them or have a real go at speen moors and really get to grips to where the fish are? More of a rambling post really but with baby due end of October I need to be making the most of my time on the bank and enjoying it which I havn't been the last month! Any ideas on a change of fishing be it species or approach more than welcome!
  11. I've had a set of sundridge optonics for nearly 4 years, brilliant alarms for the money
  12. Cracking fish, well done!
  13. Well I was going to ask a question but Rusty beat me to it! Would you use a fairly long hooklength to keep the bait away from the mainline coming off of the lead? In my head the hooklength and mainline would come away from the lead paralel to each other due to the flow? The only difference being the mainline would be at an angle therefore the longer the hooklength the higher the mainline is over the bait? Or am I just thinking too much into it
  14. 3lb test curve?! Wouldnt use any higher than 2 for surface fishing, generally use a 1.5lb Avon rod
  15. The one thing I would add to that is loosen your clutch off a bit, carp have a tendency to make a run for it when you get them near the net, this may happen a few times before they give up.
  16. I would use a cage feeder rather than a method feeder with a halibut groundbait plug at one end, fill with pellets then put another groundbait plug at the other end with a hair rigged pellet... But as grumpybum has made a point that the fish have become wary of pellet then a nice big lobworm on a size 6 with a maggot feeder would be a good bet. As for the float rod maggots/corn/bread/worm every time. I don't know the river but at a guess there will be: Barbel Chub Perch Dace Roach Possibly carp, tench and bream?
  17. Well done tigger amazing couple of sessions, very jealous!
  18. What are you trying to catch? From the overhead pic its hard to tell a lot about the depth, features etc. Possible starting point would be a trotting a float with maggot, corn or bread, or a maggot feeder with a quivertip. I would say leave the bite alarms at home and use a float or quivertip
  19. Eeeerm..... May not want to admit that on an open forum Phone
  20. That's impressive, congratulations to them have a good time Chris!
  21. I think the well spaced out square metal 'pegs' look interesting, nice and grippy when wet
  22. Just doesn't seem natural to me taking a fish that is naturally in flowing water and sticking them in overstocked muddy puddles, fair enough these fish are for it and will never have seen flowing water and there are 'studies proving they thrive' but I personally would rather sit by flowing water catching (or not as the case invariably is) them in their natural environment not shoulder to shoulder on the banks of a commercial. That is what I personally find wrong with still water barbel, but as ever it's each to their own

    Trout on the Kennet

I've caught countless trout on that section with hair rigged pellets and boilies while fishing for barbel, (that's my 4th this season from there!)all are lip hooked and pretty much hang themselves
  24. Despite my pre and early season excitement my enthusiasm has dropped somewhat as well (maybe it's the unusual weather we are having!) No Barbel have been landed yet, despite my best efforts, which has dampened my spirits. A pb chub is the highlight so far and my morning on Speen moors with fairly consistant bites. Have done some stillwater fishing but it just doesn't interest me anymore Hopefully as Autumn draws in things will change a bit, although a new arrival end of October will make sessions shorter and far less often!
  25. Welcome! What will you be targetting? Would you prefer a straight up quivertip or a twin-tip rod?
