  2. So if as you say, there are plenty of baitfish on our coasts would they feel the need to travel inland ? Just felt like a bit of a change of scenery perhaps ? Or just visiting their urban relatives ! Let's hope that Tigers don't get the same idea, don't need one of them 'spraying' up my car tyres.

  4. They did a nice job of decimating the Dace stocks on the Thames at Richmond and after a local park lake was desilted and stocked following a lottery grant it took them only a few weeks to chomp the stock of silverfish the EA had kindly placed in there, but then again I am not too far from a large Cormorant roost up in Walthamstow.
  5. Actually No Barry, I am in favour of a cull to reinstate a balence but am a tad confused as to why you think I would want a cull anywhere else along the food chain ( hence my views regarding the roach eggs ) but it's a fact that it's not the bird's fault. I hate what they are doing to our waters as much as the next man but I'm sure if you were starving then you'd travel if it meant there was a feed at the end of it.

Hi Gents/Gentesses, Looking forward to some lively exchanges with you all
  9. Have you tried the area around Little Venice ( near Warwick Avenue tube). Used to be good for a few bites a couple of years ago.
  10. Burbot !!! Can never seem to catch one of the b*ggers
  11. Have dealt with WMAC a couple of times and have had 'out of stock' items substituted with something they consider suitable without checking with me first.
  12. Oh yes, glorious days gone by when the Summer lasted more than two weeks and Winfield ( the Woolworth's fishing brand ) was one of the few companies out there. In fact, compared with what was available at the time some of their rods weren't that bad !
  13. Don't know if you are aware but there are two sized Korum Net/Chair bag ( Large and XL-perhaps you bought the former ? )
  14. And a few drops of garlic oil to finish !
  15. Fished there the week before the biggun came out and blanked !!! Story of my life, always the bridesmaid ......
  16. Red tailed Catfish ! Beautiful looking fish with lovely eyes !
  17. Newt, I think that the fact that a lot of Southern rivers have very low silver fish populations when compared to the stocks before the Cormorants began coming inland is an indication that perhaps the Roach cannot sustain their numbers adequately. As for the fish cull suggestion, it is hardly relative. We are talking of a complete imbalance here, not just the number of casualties incurred during the usual practices which nature allows for. The Cormorant is primarily a coastal bird but due to our pilaging of the seas they have come inland to feed as opposed to starving to death seeking depleted stocks. I do not hate Cormorants as it is not their fault and are acting by instinct. Their numbers have thrived on the easy pickings from rivers and lakes, decimating some in the process and in certain areas their numbers are disproportionate and a cull is necessary to restore a balance. Do we stop trying to kill rats and mice in the cities who are doing very nicely thanks to Messrs McDonald and Sanders, despite the fact that we will never eradicate them ? No, we keep on banging away at them to try to keep the numbers to a manageable level. Too much money is being made out of fish as a foodsource ( and related products such as our pellets, etc ) for governments of the world to make bold moves in protecting fish stocks. However, the Cormorant problem might get a lot more attention should the RSPB get actively involved due to the bird species they effect as very few can compete with such masters of fishing. Even Mr Walker himself would have struggled !
  18. As well as the single hooks and small baits you might consider using Kryston Quicksilver hooklengths in Pike free areas. Light indicators and resistance free rigs should help cut down on those dropped bites.
