  1. Well at least your getting bites from the fish in your swim. You must be doing all the right things to get hook ups in the first place are the fish you are losing due to hook pulls or line snaps? Have you looked at using a pole to get the bait in the right place?
  2. Can you get bloodworm flavor, paste, boil?
  3. It is a very silty bottom not sure if thats were blood worm live? But I would seem to make sense I could not present a small bait because the lake is full of small rudd roach and perch so maggots and casters , hemp and worm did not even hit the bottom I only fed a couple of hand fulls of 4mm pellets to see if that made a different but did not seem to help. The tench in this lake seem to have very small mouths the biggest fish I had had a mouth no bigger than a pound coin I had trouble with opening it mouth and fitting a disgorgea in its mouth with my finger. Can you get 6mm boile? all the traditional bait that I would usually use were getting hammered and paste would not cast the distance I would be looking for would tench eat a couple of seldom plastic maggots if there was no lose feed?
  4. I had my first tench session of the season yesterday I had a couple of good hours were I managed four fish for around 24lb including a 6lb 10 male fish which almost pulled my arm off (forgot how hard tench fight) a little different from my recent skimmers from the canal. I got to the lake a first light I had my first fish 10 hours later but then followed buy the others. Th fish were obviously feeding in the morning but I could not buy a bit the swim. It looked a little like a jacuzzi yet no movement of the float at all same bait same place same fish different time produced the results just got a pain in my back from sitting down all day. If the the fish were feeding in the morning why could I not get a bite? I changed bait, depth, line diameter and hook size but nothing any body got any ideas? Does this happen to anybody else. They were deficiently tench because I had one roll over the line which was incredibly annoying.
  5. it would have to be the rod every time you can do almsot everything with a rod that you can do with a pole and more.
  6. I have this problem of trying to catch big roach out of carp lakes, I found that how I fed and were I was fishing had a massive effect. I found in the lake that I fished depositing a large amount of bait ] using a bit dropper on the pole line and waiting for the roach to move on to the feed was more effective rather than feeding little and often which seems to attract more carp in to the swim and push the roach out. I found that fishing outside the carp patrol routes and drawing the roach on to different lines. I was fishing about 6 meters from the bank away from the shelf and at 12 meters in open water. Are you allowed to lose feed in the lake you are fishing most of the French lakes that I have fished were you are allowed to take fish for the pot ban lose feeding of any sort.
  7. After a little more searching on that interesting web site I found three different spices that Australians referrer to as Perch. Macquania Colonorum ( Estuary Perch @ 22 lb 10z) Bidyanus Bidyanus (Silver Perch @ 17lb 10) and Macquaria Ambigua (Golden Perch 59 lb 8 oz) which may give us the answer to the 22lb perch that it is a different speices to what we no as the perch. There are some fantastic species of fish on that we site I would love to catch a Esox Reichertii or Amur pike and a Speckled peacock what fantastic looking fish.
  8. I uesd to watch rex hunts fishing and the uesd to catch red fins (perch) to eat and i hear they are very good but they seem about the same size there as they are here they never got any over a 1lb or so but who know a 22LB perch that would be a sight i wonder how big its mouth would be
  9. have you seen the chub look like they are preping it for the table
  10. Hi all I started fly fishing on the river last session and really got in to it. Just dusted off my gear to get some practice in before the rivers open. Is there any way to tell the weight of fly line with out knowing the name of the manufacturer my floating line seems to be a lot lighter than the sinking version they are both the same weight?
  11. I have a pair of the Japanese made Aero 4000GTM and they are far superior to any of the newer models that I have looked at buy far the best reels I have used I also have a pair of Aero 6000 that are looking a bit worse for ware they are about 12 years old and every now again the back wind will engage its self when playing fish which is a massive pain. Can I send them back to Shimano for a service? Has anybody done that and if so ho to you go about it? it looks like one of the members on here will service reels?
  12. You No i havent even thought of that. I think I just unfortunatly must subconscious class river fish as a differnt species.
  13. The closed season is now in effect. I was ready to fish the river yesterday and was told In the tackle shop that the river was closed I always thought that the season ran from 16th to 16th (i blame my dad) so went down to the canal and had a very good short session catching good skimmers and some roach as well. When walking back home I popped down the river to see what I will be missing for the next couple of months and low and behold there was a guy fishing the river? I asked him if he had made the same mistake that I was going to but he replied that he was fishing for eels and trout using a quiver tip and worms are you still able to fish the river using this method? Is it the right thing to do from a sporting point of view fish spawning and all? Is this just a loop hole that some people flaunt or is a common practice and what’s to stop people fishing a nice gravely shallow glide common place to catch eels?
  14. I clean and sort out my gear after every session so I am prepared for the next. Clean and well maintained tackle will give you that much more confidence when playing that special fish not having that niggle in the back of your mind that you line might be week or your reel locks up under the rod tip. Being clean and tidy on the bank not just in the case of leaving litter bank but having every thing you need to hand like a disgorgea or a set up landing net the amount of people I see set up and start fishing just to lose the fish that they have just hooked because they did not set up there landing net. I took the old fluff chucking during the closed season last year and got well and truly hooked. Not only did I catch quite a few trout but hand a load of different species thrown in there two from good roach, perch, Chubb, pike even a minnow fishing the same stretches of river that I fish in the course session.
  15. I have just started using braid when feeder for these shy biting winter fish my problem I keep snapping the hook length on the take which is really frustrating. I have scaled down my tackle to 2LB bottom to get takes and use stronger hook lengths I don’t get any bites. I have seen something called power gum but never used it anybody used this? I have tied a length of mono from the braid to the swivel about 8 feet long to try and cushion the strike but does seem to help as I said I have just started using braid is this a problem you can over come with a bit of practice or product?
  16. A pair of Shimano Aero 4000 GT with 6 spare spools £120? in absolute mint condition. Two of the spools are loaded with brand new braid. Does anybody here use braid for there feeder fishing and if so do you need special eyes or will my standard feeder rods do?
  17. At least that one has some reeds i have seen pools with just barren mud banks and no landscapeing what so ever not my cup of tea at all.
  18. you could also fish for free right in the center of bath from pultny wier down through the city which can offer some fantastic sport and its free and eay to get too plus the missis could go shopping. trotting for good roach and dace or on the feeder for perch bream and the odd carp.
  19. I have just finished my stick float blanks and thrown them at my dart board they seem to be properly balanced. I was just admiring the paint job that you have done and was wondering what paints you use? The main problem i had with the stick floats was drilling the hole for the spigot i could not get mine to go exactly stright i was wondering how to over come this.
  20. How fast flowing are we talking about? Is the river a consistent depth? I fish a few stretches of river which push through at a fair pace that are pretty consistent five feet of water I tend to bulk the main shot approximately 15inch from the hook and then fish droppers down the line to about 4inch away from the hook mainly of no 6 just like a shirt button but with the bulk shot being the tie knot. This is what I do help it helps.

i have had quite a few pike on maggots from the tiny jacks (which look amazing) to mid doubles (which take some getting in on stick gear) so a fish made out of maggots got to be a winner
  22. Thanks for the replies I think it raise some interesting discussion. My original question has been answered as always with people best advice from their experience. To me building my own tackle and going through the process of trial and error to get some thing that works better then I can buy is part of the fun and interest.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of fishing is thinking outside the box and experimenting with different techniques some of the more successful anglers use methods, baits and techniques that other anglers would not think of or just out right dismiss as nonsense (ha using plastic imitation maggots/corn what a joke you will never catch anything on that) superglueing maggots together seems like quite a lot of fiddling personally never tried it but I can see that it might be effective so before you dismiss the idea why not give it ago you might be surprised.
  24. Yes and no I am mainly going to use it for lures but that’s why I asked the question it seems that you could use one but I don’t know. Don’t really fancy whittling down pieces of wood but if that’s the way it is done than then I shall have to do that.
  25. I am starting to think that making my own stick floats is good idea seeing that my local tackle shop has a woefull collection and I have pretty much gone through that. I am in the process of getting a small wood lathe to experiment with and see how it goes. Does any member on here make there own floats etc and if so any hints and tips for the beginner. I done a lot of research on different wood and finishes etc and I seems that you can make a lot of tackle if you have the tools can any body help.
