  1. Regrettably, well known Essex matchman Dave Farrugia died suddenly last week. Dave was an accomplished match angler in the Essex and London areas, and more recently in the Cambridge Area, where he had moved after retirement. He was well known to Essex, London and Cambridge match anglers so I would appreciate it if you could pass on the sad news to those who knew him. The funeral will at Corbets Tey Crematorium, Upminster on Friday 20th April at 1pm - 1.20pm - no flowers please, but if anyone wishes to make a donation to one of his favorite charities, there will be donation envelopes available at the service. He was a good friend to me since the early 50's, when he moved from E London to Dagenham
  2. Due the recent pollution of the Thames which resulted in the almost total destruction of a large section of the River's eco-system in the London area I have entered the following petition on the government petitions web site here: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/6611 This problem of legalised pollution also affects most UK rivers - to help put a stop to this please sign the petition. Many Thanks and Kind Regards Barry
  3. Thanks for the good wishes John - Chin remains firmly up and neck remains in it's normal, fully extended position........... Chesters - I only wish I could fill my face to excess on Sunday but strict instructions that came with the 'taster' say Light Breakfast, very light lunch at middday and then Zip, Nada, FA until the main meal on Monday. I can drink as much water or clear fluids as I wish - does anyone know if a decent Pinot Blanc counts as a clear fluid? It's not all bad news tho - had an Ultra sound this morning & the suspected Aneurism of the Aorta has proved to be normal (well, normal for me anyway - Docs words, not mine..) All that remains is to find the cause of the projectile squits that I've been suffering for the last 3 months. Cheers Barry External House Renovations & Pebble Dashing Specialist. Reasonable cost, Anywhere, Anytime - Any colour you like as - long as it's Brown.
  4. I got an invitation to a great feast today, a small jiffy bag turned up with the postman - "I've not won anything on Ebay this week" thought I - "I wonder what it could be possibly be.....? " It seems that I have been invited for a Barium Meal next Monday, they even included a taster in the form of a small package of...........PICOLAX ?????. I don't think I'm gonna enjoy this meal but I hope the 'taster' is OK .............. Cheers Barry
  5. I haven't done any serious Crucian fishing for years - nearly always used the lift method with only about an inch between the 'lift' shot (usually one BB) just touching bottom. Occasionally you get those times that the float will lift, dip and generally dither about without ever giving something definite to strike at. When the Crucians are behaving like this, a good tip is (may have got it from a Dick Walker article?) to set the float a little deeper and raise the BB to about 4 to 6" from the hook, you're aiming to have the bait on the bottom by a couple of inches & the BB off the bottom by a similar amount. Quite often the dips & dithers will turn into sail-away bites that are pretty un-missable. Drift can be a bit of a problem, but it's worth persevering as the crucians don't mind a slightly moving bait - may even prefer it. Cheers Barry PS - and (IMO) a small piece of peacock quill is still the best type of float to use in these conditions.
  6. Very sad............... I grew up reading the articles/books of Fred J, Stoney, RW etc. There can be very few of the greats from that era remaing - makes me feel very old. RIP Fred
  7. Just a few points - and even an apology or two... Firstly, I should apologise to Elton for including the comments about the excessive number of 'News' threads, it would have been better if I'd made those comments in a separate posting. I didn't realise that it was just being trialled. I'm not sorry that the 'trial' is over though. --------------------------- Mark, Pike & Predators - yeah, I know what you mean, been there, done that - don't want to go there again. I bet that some of the MC's and FW's here would feel right at home there. ----------------------------- Another apology, the term 'Micro-Celaphic Individuals' - not only did I spell it incorrectly (the correct spelling is 'Micro-Cephalic'), I also got the meaning wrong, I thought that Cephalic meant 'appertaining to the brain' rather than, as Vagabond pointed out, 'appertaining to the head' Therefore my heartfelt apologies go out to all those who I called 'pin-heads', what I really meant was to call them 'pea-brained' ------------------------------ Newt, your comment: "I notice you've never bothered to contribute any money toward keeping the place alive. As long as AN is simply free entertainment for you, you have the same right to complain that a non-voter has to complain about who gets elected. None." Until you mentioned it, I didn't realise that it was possible to contribute financially towards the cost of this site, now that you have kindly pointed it out I will be looking into it, I do value this site greatly and would be sad to see it 'die'. It may be also worth noting that, of the 15 or so responders to this post, only two individuals are shown as being contributors. I haven't specifically looked at other threads to compare the percentage of 'contributors' to 'members', but if it's comparable to this post it would seem that thousands of members also 'can't be bothered'. Does this mean that they also have no right to complain? - or perhaps it only applies those who cause involuntary knee-jerk reactions in others, who shall be nameless. Finally Newt, whether I become a contributor or not - in the future, if I think there is something that needs complaining about - I shall complain....whether anyone takes any notice is, of course, another matter. ------------------------ Rabbit, try to get the name right - it's Mr Kneller, not Knellor, But I'd prefer to be known as just plain Barry, although I've been called far worse in the past, and, no doubt, I'll be called far worse in the future. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Other than those items mentioned above, I stand on every word I put into the original post - if anyone has a problem with that, tough.... I shall now return to my more normal 'Lurk' mode. Have another nice day... Cheers Barry PS - Ken, there's only one 't' in prat..........
  8. Just wondering if other people feel the same way about 'Anglers Net' as, sadly, I do now? When I first joined, about 4-5 years ago it was easily the best UK fishing forum, by far. But now, almost every time someone starts a sensible debate, in come the Malicious Bigots and Mischievous Trolls whose only aim is to see how much unpleasant Sh@t they can spread around. In recent months, the target for all this poison has included: Immigrants, Travellers, Pensioners, people of different religions/culture/color, the disabled, anyone on any kind of benefit, etc. etc. etc...............the list goes on for pages. It's usually the same bunch of Micro-Celaphic Individuals who start the ball rolling, usually replied to by the same group of brainless F@q-wits who just can't see that they are being wound up. When some of the more moderate members try to get involved in order to cool it a bit - the previously mentioned MCI's then get stuck into the moderates & the whole thing degenerates into a 3 ring circus, of no value whatsoever to anyone, bar those sad people who get their rocks off by picking on people who, in the main, are unable or unwilling to get involved in this Bigotry. I really think this sort of thing has no place in Anglers Net. Being retired and not being able to get out of the house too much these days, I spend a lot of time on the internet and usually check AN 3 or 4 times a day for 'new posts'. Just recently however, there seems to be 3 or 4 PAGES of new posts every time I check, these consist of a few interesting topics (maybe half a page), the usual amount of the above mentioned CRAP, and a couple of pages of BBC news items - do we really need these? If I want to see the news I can go to the BBC news site, or watch the news on TV, or Teletext, I do not want to see the news (unless it's related to Angling) on an Angling web site. Cheers Have a nice day.......... Barry
  9. The video is from the series 'Drop the Dead Donkey' - brilliant show, always topical & very funny.
  10. "Now I have to be very careful how I say this without sounding racist"
  11. Could be something to do with todays date?
  12. Looks very similar to this one a friend bought back from Florida a few years ago - pretty crap rod really....... This one has a broken male ferrule, snapped off clean as a whistle, whilst he was playing a smallish catfish.
  13. Naah, he once told me that he wouldn't take up golf until he'd mastered the art of knocking down brick walls, with his head.Could he be raising cash to buy a crash helmet? Naah, he once told me that he wouldn't take up golf until he'd mastered the art of knocking down brick walls, with his head.Could he be raising cash to buy a crash helmet?
  14. Sorry about that Barry, t'was I - and I've been on here long enough to know better than to call a spade a spade........however much it needed saying.......... In future I shall refrain from such un-politically correct responses. Cheers Barry K
  15. Wouldn't it be nice if all the above politicians/newspapersmen and other assorted D!ckheads turned their attention to the amount of tax fiddles being carried out by the wealthy. It'll be interesting to see what the usual trolls have to say............................ Cheers Barry
  16. According to local (London) news broadcasts during yesterday morning, some people were saying that the Man, who takes his dog for a walk at this time every day, had collapsed & the dog was trying to revive/drag the man home. The attack was reported to the police by a passing motorist who believed (not unreasonably) that the man was being attacked. The rozzers appear to have turned up mob handed & eventually chased the dog away, it was later trapped & "destroyed" Some local people who were interviewed on TV yesterday say that the dog was in no way trying to attack it's owner - just the opposite, in fact, it appeared to be trying to drag the man home & was protecting him against the locals, who were also trying to help. Then plod turns up, probably in full riot gear, and a tragedy becomes a pantomime that evolves into bigger tragedy. It now seems that the media has gone full circle with this story & the only current reports I can find state, quite categorically "DOG KILLS MAN" and that "it took 3 firemen with fire extinguishers to chase the dog away". What's the truth? Who knows?
  17. Hi Elton, This fault is usually caused by leaving the drag adjusted up tight whilst the reel is not in use. In the outermost part of the clutch assembly - usually just under the star wheel, there should be a a dished or curved, spring steel washer, if of the curved type you can usually bend them back with your fingers to restore the clutch pressure. If of the dished type you may be able to re-tension it by supporting the out edge of the washer with a bit of sturdy tubing on one side, & a suitable sized steel ball on the other side. Use a pair of Mole grips or a small bench vice to restore the curvature. I have one of these Ugly Boat reels but have never stripped it down (never used it either!) so let me know if you have problems & I'll take a look at the drag on mine. I've just been trying to find a schematic for this reel (number on mine is 2916-301) but no luck - maybe an email to whoever owns Shakespeare these days might be in order.............................. Good Luck Barry
  18. try this Chris: http://www.openoffice.org/ Completely open source & compatible with all the usual platforms & file types. My son, who's an ex PC professional - and absolutely detests all things microsoft, has been using it for years. Cheers.......
  19. Oh Sh*t..........I've been sussed
  20. Brilliant - would've been nice to be able to take 'em off as well................
  21. Absolutely mind-blowing........................ Gonna take a look at the website now.
  22. Hi Steve If you have already started a provisional list for the Wingham weekend, I'd appreciate it greatly if you could add my name. Cheers Barry
  23. I think the idea of a single entity to represent all anglers is a great idea, if it can be made to work - however, I would like to see a bit more representation for the normal coarse angler. It appears from the proposal that, at the moment, the only representation for general coarse and specialist anglers is from the NFA, who from past experience, appear to be unable to organise a bunk-up in a bed factory, and only (supposedly....?) represent the interests of match anglers. Are any of the specialist groups going to be represented here? i.e. the SAA, PAC etc. Cheers Barry
  24. If the rods are going to be used for heavy stuff like Shark you will probably be better off going for roller tip rings - these are certainly available in the UK but you'll get 'em a lot cheaper from the States, some of the cheaper ones (like most of those available in the UK) are absolute rubbish - The most reliable are from a company called AFTCO - there may be others eqally as good but I don't know of any. Actually, H&H also supply AFTCO guides, look here: http://www.hopkinsholloway.co.uk/products....=1&CatID=26 Also, if you Google "Aftco roller guides" you'll find 100's of suppliers in the US - it also may be may be worth searching ebay.com - you'll need to look for sellers that are willing to ship to the UK tho' Good Luck Cheers Barry
  25. There you go Barry...........: http://www.hopkinsholloway.co.uk/ There are plenty of other places selling guides on the internet, some probably a bit cheaper but no-one else in the UK has the selection that these guys have and they are all genuine Seymo & Fuji too. Cheers Barry
