    Deephooking

Hi Gwilym, I was starting to think I was either the only person fishing or the only one that has this problem. You always hear about deephooking pike and stitching the opening to their stomachs but I doubt I have ever read anything or even heard it mentioned in smaller fish other than perch. The thing is grayling are not all that resilient. Not to mention it's like trying to handle a squirming bar of soap while unhooking them. I'm going to try larger hooks and see if that doesn't help. Deephooking

Is it common to deephook grayling on dry flies? I don't have the same problem fishing the nymph downstream since they are most likely taking the fly from behind and not underneath. I've caught three large grayling in the last week that have engulfed the fly and were very difficult to unhook even while using barbless hooks. The size of the hook seems to make little difference even to a size 10. They have been vicious takes though coming almost clear of the water. The venue
  5. Well did anyone do any good?
  6. We had one come round at my grandads fishing camp in northern Wisconsin when I was about 8. Would come up and take the fish scraps right out of your hand. Clearly someone had been taking care of it. I saw one running the river last fall a few days after the hunt.. They obviously didn't get him. Nice picture AJP. He wouldn't last long around here I think. [ 05. September 2004, 05:59 PM: Message edited by: Jeff S ]
  7. No wonder my landlord thought us strange when my wife offered to bring by some brownies...
  8. Hi again Alan, I started learning how to cast this past January. Actually picked up quite a bit from Sexyloops. Anyway my point being you can't do any better than get out there and try it. The belt and sleeve idea is bit awkward. I've never had any lessons but seem to do quite well. A friend of mine came down to the river to see how I was doing on Saturday. I had only caught one brown in 3 hours, (usually I have about 6) The R. Laver to look at is quite small. Typically 8-10 meters wide. I had been reluctant to go underneath the trees because of my casting ability. I'm not very accurate. Anyway ideally you want to be able to cast with both hands. My friend showed me how to cast forward but release on the back cast so you really don't need to be ambidextrous. It helps if you have someone to watch. I apologize for rambling. [ 30. 9. America is very tolerant of all cultures. Try going to some places in Texas where not many even speak English. That being one of many examples. As an American living in the North? I truly love it here (three years in October). I see Britain as being tolerant if not more so than the states. And here I was going to pass up this thread.
  10. lol, and I thought they always forcast rain so when it doesn't everyone is happy. With that in mind you can definitely tell fall is on its way. Bring on the grayling!!
  11. Good thing they weren't full blown hurricanes. It would seem this year has been worse than most in the recent past eh Newt? I sat through Hurricane Georges in Mississippi in the late 90s. Not fun by any means. Not looking forward to all that rain heading this way. More landslides and floods.

    Cameras

Get something that isn't so dear for fishing. Your bound to drop it in the water Still works though. We've got another but I'm not allowed to touch it. Kodak easyshare 2.0 mp took this photo of a wild brown yesterday.
  13. We agree on that Newt. I was one of those that felt at least relatively safe living in a small community. Now I've got family and friends sitting in Iraq. It can't be all for nothing. I was buying a truck and only found out when the salesman called to see if I was still coming in to finish the sale. Turned on the television in time to see the second plane, then had to go to work.. Was in the military myself at the time.
  14. Probably Chesters you don't remember those specific things because they are America specific. I bet there are more than a few "events" in this country that you can though. A kid shouldn't have to care. They should be more worried about a skinned knee or what St Nick/Father Christmas/Santa Claus will bring them. Bringing up a child now?? Frightening [ 17. 15. And that's just it. There isn't anyone that doesn't know what they were doing at the time of the attacks. The sites posted in this thread do nothing but create doubt in what actually happened that day. If it's all a big conspiracy where is the explanation for those that took back (or not) control of the plane over Pennsylvania? The phone call to loved ones as it was happening? Or better yet explain to those left behind who lost their loved ones that it was only a ploy for political reasons. Who cares how many cameras were at the pentagon or what the big flash was before the impact. Even the media clearly showed who owned the planes that hit the towers. Who was at fault? Could it have been prevented? I doubt it. Let's hope there won't be a next time for anyone. Sore subject ain't it. Make up your own mind. 911 Commission report
  16. Here's a start.. EA Rod license The page isn't loading properly, but if I remember correctly the license costs 22.50. Your son won't need one until he's 12 but you will. Couldn't tell you where to fish. There's probably a day ticket water or piscatorial on your doorstep though. I got my daughter fishing and enjoying it this year. The best advice? Keep it simple. Good luck, it is something they will always remember.
  17. Anyone else have a "theory"?
  18. Don't give them any ideas  The third day into my holiday I spent an hour getting stitched. I took the blade off my grandmothers lawnmower so I could sharpen it. The sharpened blade spun in my hand as she didn't have a vice and cleanly sliced my middle and third finger 2/3rds the length. Even found an artery and tendon. Luckily no long term damage and only a bit disfigured I carry private insurance and wanted it made clear that no-one but myself was responsible. Wouldn't you know they are actively pursuing my grandmother because it happened on her land? This is why insurance premiums are so high they should be catching those that falsely claim an injury not those that are legit.
  19. Whatever happened to pulling it out yourself? Unless of course it's in a strange place A few years ago there was a guy in the states that had his own fishing show (his grandmother sponsored him. Newt do you remember?) It has since been cancelled. Anyway he actually imbedded a hook in his hand on camera and then demonstrated how to get it out. Must be why it was cancelled.
  20. I agree but I can only guess at where it actually came from. With all in the news I don't know. Her choice of words leads me to believe that she heard it somewhere other than with us. Murdered in my opinion only applies to people.. and she wouldn't consider fishing/hunting as such since she has lived with that for the majority of her life. Anyway here she is in Northern Wisconsin this past month. Well traveled our destinations this summer.. Oregon, Wisconsin, Britain, and France. Maybe she got it in France. They have snails there eh?
  21. Not sure how to approach this so I'll just put it out there.. What do you say to your child when they come up with this? While holding a piece of a snail shell in her hand she says "Look Daddy someone murdered a snail". Where do they get these things?
  22. Just downloaded the plumber myself... and another.
  23. Hey Malcolm, I picked up a 5 piece 7.5 foot 4/5 rod from Cabelas in the states. Can't wait for it to arrive. My daughter has made comments about trying out my 9.5 foot 7/8.. I don't think that will happen any time soon but at least she is eager. Hopefully we'll be practicing this weekend. I should have read this a few days ago but seem to be running out of time with everything. Thanks for the thought.
