  1. Commonsense should dictate but I haven't yet figured it out.. Just wondering what the etiquette should be for a runner on the river bank approaching walkers with dogs? What do you expect from a runner? I usually start to walk once I get within 100ft or so and they are walking towards me. About the same if I am approaching from behind. Sometimes the walker will stop and take hold of their dog while sometimes not. The majority of the walkers I have encountered with dogs do not use a leash, so I do not want to end up in hospital from being bitten. I'm not the type that would seek compensation either. Just last week in the city center while running I had a large german shepherd run up behind me -no owner in sight- I only heard its toe nails clicking on the pavement and it was about 0600. Only thing I could do was turn around and walk slowly while facing it. Scary too but would like to keep incidents to a minimum
  2. Mine is covered by membership of my piscatorial association. A pond and a small lake are included with the canal and open to fish during the close season. Fished it last year not really understanding why the river was closed but everything else was open. Not so this year. To my knowledge there isn't anything but coarse fish to be caught there. If spawning is the reason for closing the rivers then why allow it elsewhere. Perch, pike, tench, roach, bream, chub, and dace don't spawn on canals and stillwaters?
  3. err.. moose knuckles? I like mumbles though.. lmao [ 11. March 2004, 08:03 PM: Message edited by: Jeff S ]
  4. A year or so ago my local river was stocked with a few hundred brownies. Since then I've only caught 5. The largest only 18". The last one I actually saw was when I took my little girl fishing last July. With that in mind I can't justify fly-fishing the river. It's open for trout during the close season. I've fished nymphs and every other fly I can think of for grayling and never once caught a trout. So unless I go to one of the reservoirs or trout fisheries I'm hanging up my rods. Time to play catch-up in the garden anyway.
  5. Finally got to watch it this week as well. I ended up in stitches when up popped a thunderstorm and they brought out the umbrellas. So who in their right mind would sit in a boat under an umbrella during a thunderstorm? The message in the corner said something to the effect 'We do not advise fishing in these conditions' Still a refreshing program.
  6. Does anyone recognize the music playing on the visit Scotland adverts? Where can I find it? I never would have thought I had that preference. Can't stand most of the C**P on the radio and now I'm starting to sound like my own parents. I hope this isn't a strange request.. Thanks [ 09. March 2004, 10:08 PM: Message edited by: Jeff S ]

    rubbish

It takes more than that if you are the only one picking it up and you move swims often. The stretch I fish is pretty clean actually... My membership book says anglers must clear away any papers, bottles, cigarette ends, and litter in their fishing area. Doesn't say whether you brought it or not. Still I end up packing it out. It's not all anglers.

Try here . Don't know about day tickets or how much they cost. I read somewhere the fishery is completely closed between March and June. Couldn't hurt to ask though. [ 09. March 2004, 06:54 AM: Message edited by: Jeff S ]
  9. I have always heard what Pangolin said was accurate. Then the inevitable question. What about fish with no scales? I also understand there is a bone inside the fish that can help 'age' them. Detects vibration I think.
  10. I would think that the temperature difference would make it so they spawn earlier in the south. Doubt the time change spring forward/fall back makes a difference though.. All joking aside of course... Or is it coarse?
  11. There's a mention of a new stance on cormorants in this months issue of Fly-fishing and Fly-tying. It says Ben Bradshaw MP, Minister for Nature Conservation and Fisheries, has called for a review of the measures that gave the cormorant protected status. Cormorants placed on the protected list in the 70's, now have a winter population totalling over 23,000 in the UK. Speaking at the Third National Angling Summit, he said that such is the concern about the quantities of endangered species this bird consumes, he proposes that cormorants should now be managed at certain times of the year to protect fisheries, and urges a review of the system granting licenses to shoot cormorants. I scare them off my favorite grayling swim nearly every morning during my run, 15 minutes later on my way back I scare them off again. Maybe Mr Bradshaw can get things moving.
  12. Sounds like it's purging your temporary internet files or cookies. I'm probably wrong but even so I wouldn't know how to fix it. Sorry Chesters
  13. In another thread it was mentioned how to get around the close season. With the season about to start or close, depending which way you look at it, how many of you will leave the rivers in favor of stillwater? Anyone switching to fly-fishing? In no way am I trying to encourage a close season debate. Just curious.
  14. Terribly sorry for your loss Frodo. He will always be with you.

Try here fourth book down. The Fly-tying Bible. There is another that describes specific techniques. It was around 40 pounds I think. If I can find it again I'll be sure to post it here. Get it from this site if you can.
