  1. The immediate issue that springs to mind there is that you can use both game fishing i.e.lures and fly fishing for sea species as well the obvious notable candidate here is the Bass now would they get classified as a game fish or a rough fish under the US system as they are frequently bait fished for as well should using lures and flies at sea come under game fishing or sea fishing. I'm now going to run for cover as Newt draws out a Very large revolver!!! :D :D
  2. Courtesy of my dear significant other I will now be spending both the day of the Christ Mass and Boxing Day cooking for assorted relatives so no fishing for me until very likely Tuesday Then I plan to chase grayling and chub on the upper Ribble if I can find enough space between all the flaming salmon that seem to have got crammed up there!
  3. Emma if you read the posts I have made there is nowhere where I have written or implied that these groups 'should' go anywhere I would never be that prescriptive. This discussion is descending in to the realm of tedious semantics with all the validity of 'How many Angels can you fit on the head of a pin'. For now until Elton feels like renaming the section something along the lines of :- " Fly Fishing and All Other Related Methods of Game Fishing to Include Spinning,Worming,Trapping, the use of Explosives,Netting,Method Feeding,Light ledgering,Trotting, and Other Sundry and Diverse Methods for All Manner of Game Fish to Include the Salmonoids and Other Nominated Species as shall be Duly Approved" Lets simply take it that anyone can if they so wish put any game fishing related topics in the fly fishing section! or even in the sea section if they like..... And as for this evening having any special significance my view is that the only thing that Scrooge ever got wrong was to buckle under pressure Bah! Humbug!
  4. Because that is where the salmoniod related articles are most likely to be found in the first instance and to be honest I would imagine that those who are so fixated on salmon fishing in all it's ways will go to somewhere that specialises in this particular area like the SFF. Equally I would imagine that given the diversity of the internet most specialisms are catered for whether it be deep trolling for ferox or dapping for roach someone out there will have something about it on the web so those seeking after some form of holy grail in a niche area is unlikely to come to a general site like AN in the first place. So for now lets all think of the currently labeled fly fishing section as the Game fishing section in all it's glory and fill it with threads to entertain and from which we can all hopefully learn. Nunc dimittus!
  5. To be fair Emma the section is whatever the contributors want it to be. The label on the front may say fly fishing and that is because in the minds of most fly fishing is inextricably linked with game angling and it is how most lay people would differentiate the two. If you want to go ahead with threads discussing for example, the minutiae of upstream worming for trout in that section, then feel free to do so, and indeed such a discussion would be interesting for me at least. I suspect that most anglers who are looking for information on these boards on any form of fishing for game fish would tend to turn first to the Fly fishing section. As ever I am aware that for as long as people have angled with the fly they have used it for both the coarse and the game species I maintain that currently a working majority of anglers who fish the fly do so for the game species which in the UK context tends to mean the salmonoids, grayling retaining it's rather odd position in the minds of many and anyone who has ever caught a bass on a fly would certainly demand that they be promoted to the class of game fish!
  6. As far as I am Concerned the only thing that Scrooge got wrong was that he buckled under pressure I have no such intention.Bah Humbug!!
  7. This has got to be something of a very worrying first in that I am going to agree with Chesters on something :o I feel that there is room for a dedicated section for old tackle/traditional/classic angling type posts and we could automatically drop all of the dreaded centerpin threads in there and that will save us all having to repeat ourselves endlessly on the subject. Way to go Chesters!!! Now that's ruined your credibility when the mods agree with you!!
  8. [quote We really need a game fishing section. We have one!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
  9. and if you check his A&E notes all you will see is NFS..................Normal for Suffolk!!!!!!!!!!
  10. My recommendation would be the Okuma Adventa Pro apart from the colour difference with the Sheffield the pro has the advantage of having the handles set a little further in towards the center of the drum which is a major bonus when Wallis casting as it greatly reduces the chances of getting your knuckles rapped. These reels are well made workhorses that will last you for many years Once you have learned your craft on one of these reels Then you may want to go down the slippery road of tackle tartery and buy the likes of Lythes and Carters reels but they are no better as fishing reels just worth more on the collectors markets!
  11. I have no problem with Normarks other than they tend to be out of the price range of nurses incomes But Hawk did use the term 'reasonable price' and most of the Normarks tend to go for sums that would from my wages look rather less than reasonable. Wealthy men like you Tigger are entitled to a different perspective Not that I am jealous mind it's just that wherever I spit nothing will ever grow again!!! Good lord reading this back makes me sound as tight as a.......................Yorkshireman
  12. Good value for money can usually be found with the Shakespeare range I would start there
  13. That article comes under the heading of fair comment as far as as I can see
  14. Janet not far from you there is a dark county wherin the natives are still painted in wode and tis said that the finest thing that comes from this dark county is the road back to Lancashire..... However though the natives are oft described as being like Scotsmen but with the generosity removed there is an advantage in this for goodly thrifty Lancastrians for,as the Yorkists as they are known are sitting on a shedload of great cheap river fishing and a few decent still waters check out Bradford City AA and Bradford No1 as a good starter. When your boat goes on the Lanky cut there is plenty of decent mixed fishing all along it's length especially in the basins and nowadays due to the rise of the commercial fisheries it rarely gets fished! Happy Days! So there is really no need to pack in the fishing job just yet. Oh and by the way if your fly gear is still water oriented i.e. AFTM 6 and above swap it for some river fly gear and give me a shout in the spring and I will show you some great trout sport that requires little casting.
  15. To be honest budgie I wasn't even aware of any other thread on this subject but it appears that several of us have a similar clarity of vision regarding Hardy's it's just a shame for the workforce that the management didn't have that long term strategic overview and as a result has let them down.
  16. Sadly the whole event is no surprise the stuff is overpriced and is not being made in this country Hardys made their name with high end high quality tackle made in Britain by craftsmen. In recent years most of their gear is imported from China and the adverts all tended to run along the lines of 'Designed in Britain' and there was a sort of cack handed attempt to get their customers to think that though the gear was being imported from China it was in some way 'British' when clearly it wasn't and despite the fact that some of the gear was passable in use, Chinese made kit does not carry the Kudos that British made kit did. A percentage of Hardys customers bought with one eye on the collectors market in the future and in this arena the Chinese made kit was never going to pass muster. Some of the gear was frankly not up to the mark either I have in the past slated the Hardy Conquest Centerpin and not without good reason. Several of their fly rods have had quality issues notably the angel range. If you are charging the kind of money Hardy's was for it's products you cannot afford to have quality issues. Whilst I feel desperately sorry for the families who will suffer due to the loss of these jobs the company has only got it's management to blame for following such a poor business model.
  17. Cane Rods are fantastic....................For growing tomatoes up!
  18. If you need more distance invest in a pair of decent breathable chest waders and get in....carefully! Other aids that can make life a little easier are fluted floats which tend to hold a line better and floats with a pronounced shoulder
  19. No unless your club has requested this my game angling club has but suprisingly I have managed not to catch any of them but to be fair I spent most of my summer trouting on the Aire
  20. Yes The blue spotted brownies were stocked by various associations including my own game angling club some of them if not all are triploids hence the identifying mark on their bellies
  21. I also have an Okuma Epix which I have had ever since they first came out and it has been used for all sorts of things including float fishing in the sea whilst on holiday and whilst the chrome has flaked off and the paintwork is shabby the reel still perfoms superbly it has the best rear drag of any reel I have owned. The range that will look good the longest is the now defunct Amazonium as they were self coloured all the way through if you can find any grab them!
  22. Whilst I don't know the Aire that low down the river I do know it very well higher up and what has been happening up there is that the water has got progressivly cleaner and clearer from Skipton upstream all the way to the source. One of my game angling clubs has the fishing from the source downstream for the best part of the first couple of miles and subsequently has a further long stretch slightly lower down however the interesting section is the BAA lengths below Skipton as not too long ago they held a goodly head of coarse fish including some big chub and some pike. Nowadays these have moved downstream towards Silsden and Keighley as the water has got cleaner what was once coarse fish habitat has been taken over by grayling and trout and this seem to be an ongoing process. There was a previous stocking of barbel at Kieghley a couple of years ago this involved about 1000 fish some of which are now starting to show in anglers catches. So it would appear that the EA's moves to stock lower down have a sound basis as the river is considerably better at supporting a greater biomass than previously let's not forget that a little over 100 years ago it was clinically dead. The new Aire trust is working towards getting fish passes installed right up and down the river so eventually all of these fish will have greater freedom to migrate and this will bring big benefits in due course. Barbel do seem to have one big advantage over many other coarse fish in that they seem to be able to survive predation by cormorants had this not been the case the Ribble would have been in a terrible state for many years. So all in all the EA has done Tyke angler a favour.
  23. I've used the Drennan Team England ones for years and have found them to be very good
  24. Needless to say since that incident I went out and bought 3x Marco Cortesi reels for that purpose it may not stop people dropping stuff but it reduces the cost when they do!
  25. Like all the other forum members I am stunned and saddened at the news of your loss my thoughts are with you
