  1. A mate of mine has even caught carp on the surface using a Medusa type rig - loads of wriggling maggots on a floating cork ball. Also meant to be an ace method for barbel though not on the surface of course!!(oops wrong forum! ) Chris
  2. I returned to the 'pin in about 1990 (my first reel when I was a nipper was a 2¾in pin) because I'm convinced that for trotting a river it is quite simply the best tool for the job and yes they are a joy to use as well. It 'forces you to present the bait properly. Let me quote The Trent Otter (writing in 1906)to explain what I mean.."...take care that the float does not travel quite so fast as it would like to. This gentle holding back of the float causes the bait to travel a little in advance, and the strike, when a fish takes it, is more sharp and direct. Now this is most important in any sort of stream fishing, when the float must of necessity be a good distance below where you stand: the bait must not be behind the float." This year all my PB's (Roach, Dace & Tench) have been on the pin (OK the tench was margin fishing a local pit)and have joined my 'pin caught PB's for Chub, Perch & (of course!) Grayling. As for recommending braid for the pin this again is what was originally used with this bit of kit. Mono can actually damage a pin if left on the reel - it may contract and damage the spool. And yes they can become bloddy addictive!!! Chris [ 10. March 2003, 08:09 PM: Message edited by: Chris Plumb ]
  3. When's the book review jobby going to be 'up'? I've got another 4 for you which I'll send over the next week... Chris
  4. Err - your answers are meant to be in metres. Chris
  5. Beat me to it! I'd recommend the 4lb B/S Fireline floats, easy to 'mend'(ie pick up slack and take the bow out of the line) and great for 'striking' at distance as there's no stretch. Chris
  6. It's a mistake to think that Waterlog is for 'Traditionalists', it's for anglers EVERYWHERE regardless of creed. And has for being hit and miss - well I'd like somone to show me and edition that was a miss!!! 64 pages of pure pleasure eagerly awaited ever 2 months and devoured with avarice when it arrives. Great writing with plenty of wit - puts the weekly comics to shame.... Chris
  7. Can I have 284 guesses please??? Are you using the original 1891 tables or the 1997 revisions Chris
  8. Did he actually SAY they were a cross?? Pikeperch IS an alternative name for Zander but they are both the same species - Sander lucioperca. Part of the perch family and NOT a cross with a pike! Chris
  9. Gosh. You have mail Julian. Chris
  10. Noticed a few new names on this board in the last week or so - Slyder & Rudd for example. Welcome aboard chaps, glad to see more folks giving tangible support to this great site. Chris
  11. And poor City didn't do much better against my lads last night either even scored our goal for us as we seemed incapable of doing it. Chris
  12. The math bit will ALWAYS give you a number divisible by 9. Then it's quite easy to spot what's going on..... Chris
  13. This is fairly clever - least it is until you work out how its done. Chris
  14. Yup definitely 'take your pick' on this one... Whole nine yards Chris
  15. I believe they're trying - certainly on the Kennet. Chris
  16. Found it! thanks. If Lee reckon's its good then that's good enough for me to give it a whirl! Chris
  17. Steve - H Cholomondeley Pennell reported EXACTLY the same thing happening to him whilst fishing for perch in the Lake District in 1880!!! (As reported in Fishing's Strangest Days by Tom Quinn!) Chris
  18. Why should a club provide bins - someone's still got to empty them and they can just attract rats. A club I belong to once had a litter problem on one of their waters - their solution? - they CLOSED the water for a whole summer. Members were in uproar! funny thing is this was over a decade ago and litter aint been a problem since. )They also REMOVED bins from this water because of the rats..... Chris [ 04. 19. Lee - I couldn't find Red Rapeseed mentioned on the Haith's site is it called anything else???? Chris
  20. Sorry Dunk - the point I was making is that nowhere on any EA literature I've seen - or on their site does it mention about reporting sightings of this pest. And yes I'd much rather see voles - they don't try to steal your luncheon meat... I'll certanly be reporting them in future. Chris
  21. Me neither - I often see mink. Mind you I can't find any mention of this on the EA website - you'd think they'd have a 'Mink Hotline' or somefink. Chris
