I returned to the 'pin in about 1990 (my first reel when I was a nipper was a 2¾in pin) because I'm convinced that for trotting a river it is quite simply the best tool for the job and yes they are a joy to use as well. It 'forces you to present the bait properly.
Let me quote The Trent Otter (writing in 1906)to explain what I mean.."...take care that the float does not travel quite so fast as it would like to. This gentle holding back of the float causes the bait to travel a little in advance, and the strike, when a fish takes it, is more sharp and direct. Now this is most important in any sort of stream fishing, when the float must of necessity be a good distance below where you stand: the bait must not be behind the float."
This year all my PB's (Roach, Dace & Tench) have been on the pin (OK the tench was margin fishing a local pit)and have joined my 'pin caught PB's for Chub, Perch & (of course!) Grayling.
As for recommending braid for the pin this again is what was originally used with this bit of kit. Mono can actually damage a pin if left on the reel - it may contract and damage the spool.
And yes they can become bloddy addictive!!!
