  1. Welcome to AN. Confucious say "I man who doesn't ask a question is stupid for his entire life. I man who ask's a question is stupid for 5 minutes" - or in your case until a pole angler (of which I'm not one !!) sees your posting!! So ask away and enjoy your stay! Chris
  2. What many folks now don't realise is that The Freshwater Fisheries Act, 1878 was introduced as a Private Members Bill by one Anthony James Mundella. Mundella was mainly responding to pressure from the coarse angling community for such a break - particularly northern anglers including his constituents in Sheffield. (At the time Sheffield boasted of 211 angling clubs!). Having failed in 1874 he was succesful 4 years later. Yes, the close season was introduced at the behest of anglers of the time. Many arguments against the close season appear to be not about the need for it but the timing of it!! Yes, it's a bit late for say Dace and probably too early for say Tench. So yes the timing's not perect but this ISN'T an argument for not having one surely! Peter spoke of pike - in fact spawning is very stressful for most fish and spring time sees many not survive the experience and this without man's interference. In short all the arguments in favour of abolishing appear to be economic ones; those in favour of keeping it conservation ones. I know which side of the fence I'm on. I've yet to meet a TRUE river angler who is not in favour of the close season - unfortunately we make up the minority of anglers (as recent EA figures showed). In fact I doubt if the majority of ALL anglers are in favour. One of the clubs I belong to had a free vote on the issue the season before last. 70% of the membership voted (A high turnout I'm sure you'll agree) - only 20% were in favour of opening up the club's still waters all year round. Hooray for them & one VERY good reason why I will continue to pay my subs! These are the sort of anglers I want to rub shoulders with! I'd like to finish with a quick quote from the late, great Peter Stone writing in Waterlog 3 years ago... "On stillwaters it is too late. Where the rivers are concerned my message is this: PLEASE (his emphasis) do not bow to the pressure from greedy anglers. Long may the fish enjoy their annual love-in undisturbed; long may anglers walk through fresh grass and sit behind lush vegetation. Your job is to protect the environment; do not fail in your duty." It's very sad that we seem to been having this argument ever since. Alas, there are now plenty of stillwaters open all year round so if you want to fish between March and June - seek these out BUT LEAVE OUR RIVERS ALONE! Chris [ 15. 3. I NEVER sleep the night before - I'm sitting on the bank waiting for midnight!!! Chris
  4. Or use a bait dropper - I went to a talk given by Stefan Horak last close season and this was pretty much what he recommended as well - often feeding in maggot for up to 6 hours before baiting a hook! Fine if you've got a lot of time - many of my sessions only last 6 hours in total! Chris
  5. 15 March to 15 June. Making the glorious 16th the first day & 14th march the last... Chris
  6. Here Here!!! I shall be banging off a letter to my local MP - who just happens to be Martin Salter - who alledgedly has a brief to support angling - will ask him on his views (and report back here if I get a response!) Chris
  7. Ah - but didn't Donald Leney introduce 'Foreign' Galician Strain carp into the UK ? An interesting little paper on Carp growth can be found Here Chris [ 15. November 2002, 08:19 AM: Message edited by: Chris Plumb ]
  8. Types of Trolls found on forums can be found here... Trolls Chris With apolgies for taking this way off topic!
  9. I seem to remember some concerns of Grayling fatalities due to dining out on angler's sweetcorn - couldn't find anything on the net at the time to substantiate it. Know any more on this one Bruno? Chris
  10. Well I'd give it another fortnight - 1 Dec is about right in my book..... Chris
  11. Better still join in on the forum - http://pub6.ezboard.com/fbarbelfishingworldmessages Quite a few regulars fish the Trent. Be sure to complete your profile when you join or you may get treated with suspicion as there have been a few problems with Trolls recently (People posting anonymously and causing mischief!) Chris
  12. To be perfectly honest Newt - the sceptic in me thought they were the result of some computer jiggery-pockery - If thet really are painted hands then yes I'm seriously impressed! Chris
  13. Something resembling The Method is described in Mr Crabtree (1st published 1948) in the section on barbel. An whilst we're on early references the hair rig is described by ole Izaak himself (also in his chapter on barbel when he recommends attaching cheese to the hook with a length of silk) Nowt new is there??? Chris
  14. I THINK I've read every word Bill Bryson has ever had printed (in books at least) and whilst he's most famous for his Travelogues he also has written two futher books (apart from Mother Tongue) on the English Language. Them being Dictionary for Writers and Editors and Troublesome Words. Troublesome Words in particular is worth getting hold of. The first sentence states "This book might more accurately, if less convincingly, have been called 'A Guide to Everything in English Usage That the Author wasn't Entirely Clear about until Quite Recently'. (Both are published by Penguin) Anyone else find it ironic that it takes an American make dry subject like English Usage so readable Chris Chris
  15. Well here's an excuse for some ANMC members to get together and a chance to fish England's most famous Chalk Stream After the success of last year's Grayling Fish-in I've organised another one! I've booked our EXCLUSIVE use of the Timsbury Manor fishery on the Middle Test. Timsbury is between Romsey and Stockbrdige. The fishery offers 1¼ miles of the Test proper plus a couple of carrier streams of ½ mile each in length. The Date? Saturday 25th Jan - yes it's a weekend so no excuses this time Elton. There's a good head of grayling upto 1½lb with fish twice this size a possibility. (My best from here is 1lb 9oz). There's also some EXCELLENT coarse fishing on offer particularly specimen Roach and Chub. Price 10 quid a head PAYABLE IN ADVANCE (I've already shelled out a 50 quid deposit). If I don't fill all the spaces I might have to ask for a top up of a couple of quid - It'll still be cheaper than the 20 notes a head we had to pay last year. Fishing is allowed from 9.00am till dusk. Though you can arrive in the Car Park before then. Not many rules - barbless hooks, all nets to be dipped (dip provided), no boilies! (Not such a crazy rule there are a number of commons in one of the carriers!). A whole range of tactics work - the carriers are best tackled with a roving 'trotting' approach. This can also work on the main river as can pegging out all day with a feeder. And if you want to try your hand at fluff chucking about 200 yards of the main river is still fly only. For bait - bring the usual culprits, 2-3 pints of maggots, perhaps some corn; and bread if you fancy a go at the 2lb+ roach. So - If your interested please e-mail me at chris_plumb@ntlworld.com. (NOT my hotmail account which is the link from AN). I'll then tell you where to send your money which will confirm your place! I'll sort out directions to those that are coming nearer the time.... See you in Jan. Chris
  16. Bin put up before - not a bad idea to keep it at the top though.... http://anglersnet.co.uk/cgi-bin/ubb/ultima...ic;f=2;t=001220 Chris
  17. Thought that would get you going, Spindle. It was actually at (sort of) Jaq's suggestion that I ordered it. I didn't get any of my late Grand fathers personal possessions (he was a very keen angler) so Jaq suggested I get something in his memory that I would appreciate. This I WILL appreciate! Chris
  18. Not a lot on the horizon.... http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/europe...e/uk/radar/#top Chris
  19. Anyone on here own one? After months of shall, I shan't I - I caught the missus at a weak moment and got her OK. - So I've just committed a slice of my Grandad's inheritance and posted off the deposit on one. Won't be made till the New Year - just hope I can get my hands on it before the end of the season - I can't wait!! Chris
  20. Now THAT is good news and I think you should give yourself a pat on the back Alan, for the part YOU played... Well done that man. Chris
  21. Well the Kennet's just fine - I had a grand day roving a venue above Newbury - half a dozen fine chub to 3½lb and nice 1¼lb perch, 4 nuisance brownies and 4 dozen dace & roach added up to a satisfying days sport! Chris
