  1. If you are targeting dab specifically then old smelly black lug is king. The older and smellier the better. As for leaving old bait on your hook, chances are you'll be using smallish hooks too much bait will inevetably lead to masking of the hook point which will knacker you up straight away Matt
  2. I use fat fingers for everything......................one of the draw backs of being fat Matt
  3. How surprising that the auction ended with the grand total of 0 bids!! Matt
  4. Yea the rescue services are indeed a godsend always willing to risk themselves for the sake of others, hopefully we'll never need them but its a great releif to know their there should the worst happen. Matt
  5. Really Jase wll that suprises me not like you at all!!
  6. But do we actually learn from them? If we really did learn would there be such a frightning regularity to anglers losing their lives, this as far as I can remember has been a really bad year so far, with the 2 boys on the south coast, this instance, and the angler near Aberdeen which could so easily have been 2 if not for pure luck when the RAF chopper spotted the guys headlamp 1.5miles out to sea. We should all wear our lifesaving gear but as I said in the last topic about this subject it needs to be looked on as a last resort, fully scoping the mark your fishing, an alternative route back to safety should your primary route be cut of, making sure some one knows were you are and when you'll be back. Knowing exactly what the tide is doing and is going to do, same for the weather. And for gods sake dont take risks for the sake of a fish their just not worth it. Obviously with all the planning in the world accidents can still happen and this is where youe survival equipment comes in but with proper planning and adequate assesment of the risks most accidents are preventable Stay safe and enjoy your fishing, then go home to your families in the same state as you where when you left them Matt
  7. Yea thurso makes a change for these situations to have a happy ending, too often they don't. Will be a great relief to all their friends and family Matt

  12. Scots fishing vessel story Looks like this ones gonna turn out OK. Matt
  13. Not done much uptiding but here in Arbroath we find a long flowing trace of about 3-5ft works well with some squid/mussle the best baits no flashing lights or tricks required, although when the sea is real clear 4-5 orange beads just up from the hook really gets em going. Matt
  14. Norrie you git..let me know how you all get on, hows your boat doing? Maybe still a bit early in the year for Arbroath but at least your getting out, is it the Marie Dawn with Jim? if it is he should find you some fish he always has in the past. Definatley the best skipper in Arbroath. Matt

  19. Stuck on nightshift offshore on my own (very small platform) babysitting whilst we get some issues cleared away. Gonna be a long night me thinks. So any of you night owls or **** heads!! give us some company its a lonley old place out here at night on me own. Might even try and fasion a fishing line totally against the rules but just imagine. Matt
  20. I use 2 7000 abu's both with level winds which i use for the cod fishing in the rough grounds up her in the NE scotland where to be frank 50-70 yards are more than enough and quite often 20-30 yards are enough. The level wind means you can just wind and forget about everything else, when your fishing in the real rough stuff you need to forget pump and wind and just wind, plays havoc with the spindals but that why you buy a quality reel. I also have 2 6500 abus without level winds for fishing the cleaner beaches or when distance is required. Its all avout matching gear for the venue/species I mean i wouldnt use the nemesis, 7000 abu and 35lb line for flatties nor would I use a carp rod to catch rough ground cod. Matt
  21. it takes lierally 15 secs, just slaken off the wing nut and slide it up. Matt

  23. Finished with 2 cod. know eastaven pretty well, fished there for quite a while now. Chris when your up here fishing again get in touch and i'll tie in with you if i'm off. whats happening in the match seen havent seen any matches advertised for while. Blindog, been off a week now still ot a fortnight to go. Matt
  24. back again tomorrow so we'll see what brings. gonna start on the tay for some sea trout then move to easthaven just after HW. will let you know. matt
  25. Arrived at HW 1400hrs, 2 guys just packing up, strange as high down is the best period. The sea was really running with some big swells running in. Very dirty water just perfect for some cod. The 2 guys hadnt had a touch but I thought the ebb would produce some fish especially in these conditions. Anyway about half way down the tide picked up the first fish of the day, a nice codling of about 3-4lb, which went straight in the bag for supper. Well I thought this would be the start of it all kicking off....it wasn't and that turned out to be the only fish of the day so went home a 1800hrs, a very contented little fiherman. Once again easthaven produces the fish and I can still say i've never blanked at easthaven. Probably my favorite cod mark at the minute. Cheers guys we'll see what thursday brings Matt
