  1. You do cast further with a multiplier of that i'm convinced, but I think having a good rod is probably more important, thats where all the energy is built up and released. I have a sandstorm ZS12M and a cono-flex nemesis, these are both good rods but the cono-flex definatly outcasts the Daiwa. To be far to the Daiwa for the price its an excellent rod for general and rough ground work.
  2. I can reasonably easily put a bait 130-170yrds but up here its not really needed deep rock marks mean usually a cast of about 50-80yrds does the trick, only a few days ago i was catching codling from 30yrds.
  3. C'mon waders should only be worn when launching the boat, as soon as your in it the waders should come off, if you fall in with waders your screwed simple, theres no way you can float with 20 litres of water sloshing around your feet.
  4. 202, 'how were they supposed to' what? help themselves.... commercial fishermen have spent the last 40 years raping the sea bed of everything they can get out of it, your right in the fact that they are the same as farmers ie, greedy lots of people have made lots of money from fish. Grimsby 30 years ago was a very rich town but as most when their on to a good thing, they think it'll never end, reminds me a bit of the internet bubble, but now the days of massive landings and big bucks are gone, why? because they havn't been thoughtfull enough to realise that the pixies dont just flood the sea with marine life every night, it needs time to recover from the damage of been taken for granted. Anyway I'll get of my soapbox, it just annoys me when they go on about this, that and the other when they are the main cause of the mess their in.
  5. here here why can't everyone have some common sense. A protected nursery around our coast will do far more to encourage spawning than changing net size etc. Coming from a fishing town (Grimsby) and now living in another one (Arbroath) i really do feel for fishing families but if we are all honest they havn't help themselves over the years.
  6. I often during the autumn months only wear the bib and brace part of my floatation suit the jacket is just too warm, the Penn like the fladden has adequate bouyancy in either piece to keep my head above water.
  7. Hey TM i'd do out for 159 steps up the cliffs at the minute I sort of 1/2 slide 1/2 fall down and scramble back up, its leaving hands free to grab hold of somthing on the way back up. Still offshore at the minute so obviously no fishing but the wifes saying Arbroath had some good swells this week. Hope they stay a couple more days till I get home get that bottom stirred up. Matt
  8. Try to time your arrival when the best tides are an hour or so after darkness then arrive while its still light just before sunset it helps to set up in the light especially for someone reansonably new to fishing, you'll then be fishing well into darkness anyway. Obviously this all depends on the tides so one thing I would suggests is a good head light. Matt
  9. Well I hope it pretty damn big or me thinks i'll go the way of the cod.
  10. The sea around arbroath is thick with gold/bronze kelp gives the pollock a lovley colour. the cod tend to be quite dark as well especially during the summer.
  11. Is there any limit on how close crab fishermen can put the traps to the shore? 1 of the local boats in my area has employed the use of a small low hulled boat to get right close in, this in turn means that grounds once reasonble clean now eat tackle for for fun. Is this legal and if not whom should I be telling?
  12. I take it your wife doesn't read A.N. then winter
  13. Arbroath started with some promise took a couple of doubles in November and I thought it was gonna be a good year, been out twice this week, blanked once and yesterday only had 1/2 dozen small coalies and a 2lb pollock to show for my efforts. back to work on the 27th so that'll probably be december overwith hopefully the wonderfull month of January will be better!
  14. Well all the conditions were there yesterday for Arbroath, coloured water, big tide @ 5.5m, and at dark ' o ' clock aswell. A reasonable swell running, but could i catch out no and thats my first blank of the cod season so far, Was infested with small crabs everytime i reeled in there was one of the blighters dangling of the end. So the baits gone back in the freezer waiting for some better action next week when I'll be giving Rumness and Boden a shot. Probably tues/Wed if anyones interested you can PM me. Matt
  15. which community is that winter, i'll keep an ear open for strange and sudden disapearances!!
  16. Ben Bradshaw has received a letter from me as has my local MP, Living in a fishing town my veiws aren't too popular though.
  17. To illustrate the crisis, the report says the shape and size of stocks have changed dramatically. One of the most vulnerable species, cod, used to live for 40 years and grow 6ft long. But in 2003, 90% of those caught in the North Sea were less than two years old and had not bred. The older the fish the more young they produce, but now only one in 200 cod survives to the age of five. (copied from Kentanglers internet Link) This is a total disgrace 90% OF COD DONT GET THE CHANCE TO SPAWN. Is there any wonder the situation is so bad.
