  1. Hi Nathan A couple of years back I caught a Red Gurnard out of Swansea just under a pound. At first when told by the skipper it could be a Welsh record I thought he was joking, but Roger of Rogers Tackle, Pilot Wharf, got in touch with the powers that be, to find out that I was a couple of ounces short. Out of Rhyl one of our lads caught a Tub Gurnard of 4lb+ but was told they come much bigger. Here is a picture of Alans 4lb+ Tub Gurnard Desford Sea Angling Society
  2. 6 years ago we had a charter boat out of Southwold Suffolk. Departed 6am into the North Sea, where went I don’t know but the skipper took us to the right point for Launce. Shrimp Rigs were the things to us; we were pulling them in as if they were going out of fashion. They were put into one of those Big Blue Plastic Barrels with sea water pumped through. Later in the day, off the sand banks, we were pulling Bass up to 7 and 8lb. I’ve used live sandeel on the Portland Race and Launce has the same effect on Bass.
  3. quote: desfordsas@aol.com runs it, drop him an email for the correct address. Alan I don't run the North East Angling Forum, I just add comments like I do on other Forums. If any one has any sea fishing enquiries I will help in what ever way I can. desfordsas@aol.com O by the way I will give you a Shilling for your thoughts I do run the Desford Sea Angling Society and if any one is interested, pop into our site for photos of our Sea Fishing Adventures Desford Sea Angling Society
  4. Hi Kavemanjock North East Angling Alan told me your having problems accessing the above site. Try again using the above link. When you get on I think Cozy is the man for information in your area. Good Luck on your driving test. [ 04. February 2004, 11:25 AM: Message edited by: John E Ashford ]
  5. Hi Jim As we talk there is progress. The chap who has taking on the task last told me he had to order a cutting head. I did get some advice on how to make a temp mould but when I was asked to send my drawings and thoughts on how this should be done, a more permanent mould should become realistic. If and when it does materialise you will be the first to receive a 5oz, Pyramid Weight. There still is some good folk out there as this is being done by someone I don't know

    Hooks

As Dave says “Elton the answer is both” Using a size 4/0 baited with live sand eel would give me a better chance of catching Bass (On The Portland Race) rather than a size 1 baited with a slither of Squid Using a size 1 baited with a slither of Squid would give me a better chance of catching Black Bream (Over the Reefs Off Portland) rather than a 4/0 baited with live sand eel. To maximize your catch chances of your targeted species you do use different Hooks and Baits but that doesn’t say you won’t catch other species other than those targeted.
  7. Question for Dave Godwin I once wrote to the manufacturers about braid on multipliers and mono backing. As I find the reason for the backing is to bring the loaded spool up to a working diameter, not for the line length, as 200mtrs of braid does not make a large finished diameter on it's own. My reason being that, why don't they produce a shallow spool for holding braided lines. No new reel would have to be bought. 1 Reel,2 Spools. 1 for mono and its greater diameter Normal spool 1 for braid Shallow Spool No braid cutting or beding into mono backing As you are uptiding in the Thames estuary you know what dept and distances to cast your line. Does this make sense, or is it me fantasizing again.
  8. Whitby:- Wrecking Braid with 2 to 6ft of Mono, with a less BS, at the business end. Terminating with your Rig, Pirk Etc. This will save Braid in a Wreck Hookup. You can feel the contours of the sea bed drifting, The hook will be set quickly, in that big Cod, as there is no stretch in Braid. Weymouth:- Portland Race Braid all the way through the Boom then connected to 6 to 12ft Mono Trace. You will feel the bottom and Bass, as if they were at the end of your Rod Tip. I have been told of Braid cutting through plastic booms but not experienced this. Weymouth:- General Fishing Braid all the way terminating with a Mono 2 Hook Paternoster Rig. You will feel every nibble and bite of the fish. Good for Black Bream. Rhyl:- Rough Ground & Wrecking Braid all the way through the Boom then connected to 6 to 12ft Mono Trace. You will feel, on retrieving, every nibble and bite of the Pollack. Blackwater to Swansea:- Uptiding Mono all the way.
  9. Cheers Newt Have a look at this A quote from Hilts Molds (Moulds) "Pyramid sinkers are very good in moving water because of the large proportion of holding power to weight ratio. Just look at that large triangle (all holding power). In sandy or muddy bottoms that large triangle also prevents the sinker from rolling. We have some big friends that use the giant 3 sided pyramid sinkers (8oz and larger) to cast into a "honey hole" way out in the Columbia River using a three way swivel. The sinker is on a leader just strong enough to do its sinking and holding job. When a salmon or sturgeon takes the bait, the leader is broken and the main line is free to fight the fish. In fast, deep rivers, these gigantic pyramids stay where you want them." It may not be the pyramid we are looking for, but it comes dam close. The quote gives why the pyramid design is used. "PYRAMIDS STAY WHERE YOU WANT THEM" Hiltsmolds
  10. Somewhere to hang your hook. This one has a Bait/Hook wire. This one is for Tournement Casters. It has dimples, just like a golf ball. The holding loop is at the rear. The Balistic Pyramid. I think a good Tournement Caster will break records by 50yds Remember you seen it here First If you are in the vicinity when these things are flying through the air I suggest you wear a Hard Hat or stay in your Pram.
  11. Amazing Jim I have tried to locate that page on EBay without success. There is moulds for other pyramid weights but not this one. I will knock up some sort of primitive mould, because on one of our boat trips, 2004, I need to give it a go. It'l either sink or swim boom boom Uptiding, though there is no ware to hang your hook.I could imagine it flying through the air like some supersonic UFO, but as others have said, what will the end rig be like when reaching the seabed No ware to hang your hook ? Sh**e it's back to the drawing board. Watch this Space
  12. Nice One Eddie Have you a Web Address on that paper or was it that long ago.
  13. I am assuming these are designed to hold bottom in an anchored situation, Not Drifting. As tide and current can be slow or very fast what weights should these start and finish at: - e.g. 3oz to 1lb
  14. Hi Jim I have not seen a lead weight that you have described, but would it it look something like this. You could attach a swivel/link to the loop coming out the top of the pyramid
  15. Hi Cranfield These are examples of Uptide Booms. The top one is short 115mm and in one piece. The downtide boom is very similar but comes in two pieces and the very long one in three pieces. The end where the weight hangs is detachable from the twisted shaft on the downtide boom. At the other end I’ve tried to show the rubber with a slit in it, that holds your line and detaches when the fish makes a run. Therefore selfhooking. Ziplok Whisker Booms, I think they are called.
  16. This is a general idea on how to use downtide booms. Any variations with successful methods are welcome.
  17. Live Sandeels are deadly for Bass fishing. On your mainline( Braid) add a bead then pass the mainline through a tube boom, add a second bead then attach a swivel / link. The weight, attached to the tube boom, will be as heavy as necessary, depending on depth – wind speed – drift and current. 1oz up to 1.5lb The trace, if only two on a boat, should be 6ft up to 12ft of clear mono.(Amnesia 20lb) Starting with a swivel and terminating with a 4/0 hook through the top lip of the live Sandeel. The trace, if more than two on a boat, should be 6ft of clear mono. The reason for 6ft traces, used when more than two on a boat, so you will experience less tackle tangles when rigs are in action. When fishing, from a boat for Bass, place the rig in the water and let the trace flow away from the boom then slowly lower to the seabed. If you let the rig down to fast the trace will lift and spin around your mainline. Once on the seabed, keep the end rig there. With the boat drifting you will feel the weight knocking along the seabed. Be prepared to lift your rod, to set the hook, with Braid you will feel everything. It will be fast and furious. The fun begins, this is bass fishing. At this point your reel lever or star drag should have been set enough to let the fish take line when it turns and tries to dive. A full retrieve can now begin but allowing the fish to take line when nearing the surface. The more times the fish dives the more likely it will be a bigger fish. Now lets go for that Bass

  19. As the mist mysteriously descends onto the boat and then as quickly it dissipates with beams of sunlight into your cabin. You are then transformed into a mind of normality only to discover some of the mysteries of the sea. This is, knowing as the Twighlight Zone. You may or may not have been there, but who knows ! Cheers 4 Now Desford Sea Angling Society
