  3. According to popular opinion, low income is one of the main causes of crime... Another factor appears to be that many young people have nothing to do, exasperated by low income. Why do we not make the rod licence free for people on low income? This might introduce more youngsters to angling, give them an interest... 'keeping them off the streets' (Cliche I know ) Another spin off might be an increase in the numbers of 'licensed' anglers which would give us more political clout...

  7. Hi, Its been a while since I fished the Oxford canal, but I am certain that bread will work fine. A couple of points: 1. This time of the year, fishing 1/3rd of the way across will probably put you in the track (The deepest part of the canal). The number of boats you are likely to encounter might make that line of attack difficult. 2. The best place to fish will be on the far shelf where the better fish naturally retreat to avoid towpath traffic, boats etc. PLUS this is where the bulk of the natural food is found on a canal. I would recommend 2/3rds + across if you can. If you have a lot of boats, the further up the far shelf you can go the better. When fishing bread, I would liquidise a loaf of white bread as fine as you can get it, the fresher the better. The trick is to feed little (and I MEAN little) and often. I do not believe it is necessary to concentrate the feed in too tight an area. In fact if the feed spreads over a line say 5 or 6 feet wide I believe it encourages the fish to forage. Finally, for hookbait I would use a punch to punch a pellett of bread from a slice of white medium sliced bread. I would use a size 18 / 20 hook and shot the rig to let the hookbait fall slowly through the swim as naturally as possible. As an alternative, try an occasional flake... or indeed worm. Hope this helps... [ 04 April 2002, 01:11 PM: Message edited by: Dave Hill ]

  13. People who say they have never tried illeagle drugs could have the chance to try it then Ferret, I have nor problems with people using cannabis for medicinal purposes, I do not even have a problem with people using it for recreational purposes.... BUT... Why do you assume people who have never tried it WANT to try it? I have never tried it and am quite happy with my lot so to speak. I have absolutely no desire to screw with my brain in any way whatsoever! and for that matter that includes alcohol as well... I fail to see why never having tried something should make that something desirable? It is not a question of me not knowing what I am missing, it is more that I do not feel I am missing anything! This is not a dig at you or anyone else for that matter, I am just pointing out that not everyone is looking for whatever it is that drugs 'apparently' provide in the recreational sense. I would add however, that if I ever become ill and in severe pain, I will be the first to shout for all the drugs in the world to stop the pain!
  14. I seriously believe that PETA are their own worst enemies. I feel that we as anglers should stockpile all of these ridiculous 'news' stories about PETA and keep them in storage. If PETA ever try and launch an attack on angling again, we should blitz everybody, every publication, every notice board, billboard, email address, Forum etc. with a mass examples of extreme stupidity from PETA. This exercise would undoubtedly make PETA the laughing stock they deserve to be If the public see them for the idiots they are, they will have no credibility whatsoever...

  16. Hi Colin, Congratulations on your first pike... Pike don't just eat fish, they will eat just about anything edible and a lot of things NOT edible as well. Small pike especially since a 6" pike can feed on maggots or worms much the same as any other 6" fish. As they get bigger however, it would take an awful lot of maggots (and more importantly an awful lot of energy) to satisfy a hungry fish. The same is true in reverse, all fish will eat smaller fish on occasions. Hence many strange reports of 'none predatory' fish being caught on deadbaits etc. I think there are no hard and fast rules, just generalisations that apply most of the time. Its rather like the generalisation that Bream are bottom feeders. I have caught many Bream off the top from swims 8 feet deep In my opinion I think your pike took the maggot... I wonder if you were to make an artificial maggot lure about 6 inches long if we might just have come across a new super lure for pike??

  18. I haven't checked recently but you used to be able to fish rivers during the closed season as long as the river held trout (I think there are criteria for this that would disqualify a river stretch that had a solitary fish stocked simply to get around the laws) The other criteria is, I think, that you can only use worms and you should be fishing for Trout. I am aware of several small streams in the Midlands with a natural head of brownies. There are day ticket stretches on these streams that allow fishing with worms on the lead during the closed season. Of course plenty of Chub are also accidently caught... I am not condoning this, but I know it goes on...

  22. Alan, Perhaps you are right, maybe we should treat cannabis the same as alcohol. ie. legalise its use but then make it illegal to operate machinery etc 'under the influence'. Paul_H, I agree with your points also, but somebody who is clinically depressed can already turn to alcohol to relax with much the same result... I think...
  23. Are their two questions here? Should any fish laden with spawn count as new records? (Spawn laden fish are caught in the traditional season as well!) Should fish caught outside of the traditional season count as records? I believe that a record is just that... a record. It is a note of an historical event, something that has happened. Once done it cannot be undone! If you wish to maintain a list of biggest fish caught based on a specific set of criteria however eg. In the traditional season, not spawn bound etc. then that is a different matter. To some extent I think this already happens in terms of some fish being 'recognised' by one body and not another. If you are talking about the largest fish of a species ever caught in Britain however, then I do not believe you have a choice, what is done is done.
