  1. I go for 14mm boilies for just about any carp fishing - never had a tench take one to date... They then can be doubled if necessary.... Flavours can be odd though with boilies - certainly some seem to fish better at some waters than others. Experimentation (or patience if you keep trying one flavour) usually pays off.
  2. I agree about signage - the EA (with our rod licence money) should actually make it clear that licences are required including at commercial lakes, canals and rivers. It seems a big task, but it is not as daunting as it would first appear - most lakes could have signs mailed to them that were 'compulsory' to display. We are complaining about a guy on a river here. More absurd is the fact that upto half of the people at day ticket lakes don't have rod licences - but how many times have you ever been asked at a lake (by the owner/baliff) for your rod licence and how many signs are there instructing you that you must have one - many people honestly don't know I believe... Also ignorance is a defence - maybe not legally - but most policeman are not going to write up someone illegally fishing. They will give them a stern word, take their name and if caught again perhaps consider action. Jesus - a while back someone nicked my car - was caught working on the thing(removing serial numbers) in his own driveway, yet still wasn't prosecuted.... The crazy world we live in!
  3. Labour / Socialism = redistribution of wealth (we cannot use the C word popular in russia but it shares many similar characteristics/goals). Look at Brown, tax goes up and give it to the poor, needy, (usually lazy) and these days more often than not, foreign (Don't get me started on Asylumn Seekers). Rich people shouldn't have money, the middle classes should be kept from becoming rich, and the poor should become middle class. I will benefit from this road policy. I'll save tax on two cars, my petrol bill will crash, and living in a mostly rural area (with low wages and unemployment) I will probably pay the 2 or 3p per mile rate. People in London (who are all obviously loaded and cash rich - they would have you believe) can pay £10 or £20 a day and make up for what I do not.... However, people in the South are not all cash rich, and not all loaded. I'd also like to know how much we'd all pay to have this fantastic GPS technology installed in our cars (and for that matter, our human right to own a vehicle that the government doesn't tamper with). Frankly this will never happen, we'd boot out any government that did it - and they know it. Whats more galling is the vast amount of money spent on computer graphics, consultants and simulation models to show the M25 is congested (a 35mm camera could prove that) that we as tax payers will probably have to fork out for again. Also what about all the people (mainly women round here) with 4x4's - they do more damage to the road, they pollute the air more, they are uneconomical for short trips and if you hit someone it costs the NHS more to sort them out (proven fact before anyone has a go about the benefits of a 4x4). In this setup they will pay the same tax as a 1 litre Micra which frankly is ridiculous. I could go on, but I might antaganise folk with my Conservative views...
  4. That lead would clearly be ledgers they fish from your pond as opposed to the small, sharper (gas propelled) type....
  5. Worms for the perch, red maggots for the roach (works for me).
  6. 8's everytime - buy a pack of hooks, braid and you can knock up hair rigs that catch in minutes - even on the bank... Has anyone tried the fluorocarbon hair rigs people seem to be flogging now (I've always gone with braid)....
  7. No.....but people have done it to me. I am 25, run a tackle shop (my own) and yet I still get middle aged anglers giving us a hard time when in fact they are not right (We fly fish a section of river that only has trout in it during the coarse closed season). I think I mentioned it on another thread but the EA ** should ** give us all a copy of up to date rules including your local byelaws when we pay for our licence each year. I think the EA though do need to publicise the need for a rod licence to a much greater extent - many (especially tourists/holidaymakers) just don't know the rules.... ...In this case though tench fishing implies he has half an idea what he's after and therefore he is probably aware he is breaking the law. Useful No - I've took it down - Cheers!
  8. Presumably a week day - he probably does nothing at weekends...
  9. What you wouldn't give to spend a day in the life of.....
  10. He's had the occasionaly object thrown at him (though for legal reasons they have never struck the dumb creature). It still comes back.... All I need is a car battery, some plastic posts and a length of wire.....
  11. Aren't leeches really expensive (like £4 each bait!!) - Saw it on home an leisure.... Suppose if you want to wade around your local canal for an hour or two without waders you might get them cheaper (I'm thinking of a new business line, now all I need is a YTS shop assistant...) Good Luck with Cats - I've never tried it, but it's definitely a to do (we have a lake 30 miles off with Cats in nr. Scunthorpe).
  12. We get it a lot around here (Lincs coast) with caravanners. You cannot get worms (to buy) south of Grimsby so fishing around Sutton/Huttoft (Moggs Eye) usually necessitates a trip to Grimsby (30 miles) the day before.... I have use the Lug smartbait a lot though and it produces results. I keep a couple of bags as emergency spares for me and if the 'borrowers' want some they can give me the 3 quid the same as any one else.
  13. Hmmm The film Heat...Got it and LA Takedown (the original) - I'd go with LA Takedown for it's grittier realism, but Heat does have the actors. Oliver stone is a great, but he definitely had a better 10 years 85 through 94 than he's had the past 10 (anyone disagree?). Forgot Cameron on my original list. Terminator has to be deemed to be one of the best classic sci-fi effects/action film.
  14. In response to Peter M Trout fishing I think is subject to local byelaws in a lot of areas and the dates are ever so slightly different where you are. Closed season is October 31st through March 1st round here I think, but March through June you have to be bloody careful on the rivers. Baliffs like to see fly fishing or trout selective baits since it could otherwise be construed as coarse angling during the closed season... That said, roach, chub and just about any other 'hungry' fish will take a fly so it doens't really make sense!
  15. Fair enough. It was an idea which I thought made sense. Whilst I appreciate their view (in that the government can f!$% anything up given half the chance), surely accepting a set percentage of a licence fee without any obligations wouldn't affect them that much - especially as sea anglers need the RNLI and most of us would be happy to support them. Requesting or expecting voluntary donations is a bit of a no brainer in my opinion. I've never seen an RNLI collection in my area(inland), and most people (including myself to be honest) do not go actively looking to contribute to charity (for those who do I advise going to Goolge, type charity and flex your plastic). That said if us anglers all paid them a quid, or a fiver or a tenner every year I am sure it would make the world of difference to them... I respect the stance of the RNLI but in a modern political climate they'd struggle to remain truly independent for much longer - especially with the likes of Europe storming into OUR business.
  16. Baits that look different often work better! Carp are very wary fish. I have a pond in the garden and test the rough mix out on my ghosties prior to letting it go on a pond/lake. If my fish will eat it - any will! We also have an excellent supplier of freshly made boilies here, which are a very good product. We do 300g packs at £2.90 I think, 18 flavours, 5 sizes. If they are ordered on Tuesday they are there for Friday. We went for 300g because many of our customers buy two different flavours for a session (nearly all strawberry and/or scopex!).
  17. Sorry I forgot to praise the RNLI in my previous comment. If a sea angling licence was ever introduced (which it will one day I think we all agree) then there should be no question that some of the proceeds are used to help fund the RNLI. It's a case of being comforted by knowing they are there, even though we all hope we never need them!
  18. Without a bite alarm I'd go with Feeder/Quiver Tip rod - but yeah - float fishing is hard to beat when it works.
  19. Cats eating fish isn't against the law I don't think - Cats are known predators. Dogs and cats are treated very very differently in law, although why god knows. Owners have full responsibility for dogs - the same doesn't apply to cats I believe. That said I was also under the impression that you don't (legally) have to report hitting a cat in your car but you must report hitting a dog. My statements above might be wrong, just in case any of you have ideas about those buggers that fall asleep under your wheels (happens all the time here). Again, I'd be interested to know the name of that lilly. If a cat has complete freedom to be a predator then surely the consequences (if natural) are all part of the course! I lost a mirror this week. Last summer two excellent (and valuable) Sturgeons. The sonar stops all but one regular suspect (a big ginger sod).
  20. Hmm... What did the coverplan cost *out of pure interest* a brand new replacement mobo these days, for a two year old machine is probably about £15 to £30 - fitting is really simply a matter of pulling out your cpu/memory/cards and putting them back exactly as they are. I cannot recall how many times I've heard of coverplan changing mobos. Really they VERY RARELY go wrong, and it is very interesting to see how many people have them changed unneccessarily. The vast majority of people I've seen with mobo faults turn out to be knackered ram, and even more turn out to be viri (or viruseses). If he strikes out next week, let me know what your model of PC is and I'll see if I have any notes from previous jobs.
  21. Besides shooting them with an air-rifle (which I do not do, but the Crossman rabbit stopper is ready for action if problems persist) what would you do to keep cats off. I have a sonar scarer, pepper, and special 'wilkos' cat spray. Found a 7" mirror carp on the side of the sleepers this morning, sporting a rather funky lack of head, tail and half it's body. Short of termination and discreet disposal of the culprit demon what is the best human method of dealing with this!!
  22. Waddis, what's the best fish you've taken on one of the unbranded rods? Ive had 15lb-16lb and would be confident going higher...
  23. I think the Sharpes unbranded rods are Keenets (we stock them). Pretty reliable, not awe inspiring - but as I've said above and in previous posts for £15 to £20 the amount of pleasure you'll get from that rod is probably going to be the cheapest you'll ever get. My missus spent 10 times that today - it's done nothing for met pleasure wise(yet).
  24. Hi Any of you coarse/sea/carp anglers looking to get into fly fishing. We've had starter kits flying out this week. http://www.uk-fishing-tackle.co.uk/ Pretty good buy, all you need is a pair of waders!
  25. I've updated my signature so it now includes the link with pays AN comission as opposed to a plain web link. Just means 'any' link from this site helps anglernet and not just the one at the top of this thread. Hope that's ok Elton?
