  1. Hi Guys Gutted I couldn't make the meet in Kenford, the cars fine, typical "ladies" worlds gonna end type car problem, something and nothing, but hey where would we be without the fairer sex, anyway it's sorted. I intended to chat to the Deb'n beys in particular due to their local knowledge and experience of local waters, although I'm sure other members will have a view. Here's the problem. Many moons ago, when I was younger and lighter, I sustained quite a serious football injury, smashed collar bone and dislocated shoulder. Certain positions, lifting, reaching etc can almost dislocate the shoulder. You can guess what's coming next. Having taken the Tarpon 140 out three times now (great craft), on each occaision there has been a point when I could almost feel the shoulder rotating (about to dislocate) especially when paddling against a wave with my right arm. If this happened any distance from shore I could have a problem, putting it mildly. Mindfull of this when I bought the Tarpon, I bought a new marinised electric outboard and have adapted a crate to take the motor. I know a couple of people have experimented with motors, and I have read extensively on the subject through the US boards, but I'm not sure that all that messing about prior to launch wouldn't make the problem potentially worse. My question is:- Before I start adapting the hull with turnbuckles to secure the crate. Should I cut my losses, sell the motor and Tarpon instead looking at something like the Hobie. I am well aware of the safety issues at stake but no way am I giving up the sport, either way I will probably onle go out with other people. Your thoughts regards Flynny

Hi Welcome to the forum, there's plenty of useful and as previously stated invaluable advice from other members. As a newbie myself, I have found that it does pay to take your time. Subject to where you live, try to have a look at other members yaks, once you have decided and obtained your yak find a buddy or group for your first few trips, believe me there's loads of things that you won't have thought of, it's safer and more reassuring from a confidence point of view. Regarding the outigger question, there are a few people who have carried out this mod, mainly on the US forums, they are from guys who require a greater degree of stability such as fly fishermen who wish to stand while casting etc. Prior to getting my yak I had planned all sorts of mods, as of last weekend these are on the back burner (cheers chuggs) I would get used to paddling first. For me my Tarpon 140 behaved beautifully and felt very stable at sea but landing in surf was different to anything I had experienced. So practice, practice, practice and ask, ask, ask, ask, questions. Good Luck Flynny
  17. slight tweak, instead of shrink tube, run a piece of cocktail stick along the shank of the top hook to the eye of the trailing hook, then cover with electrical tape, you can then check rigging after use. Regards Flynny
  18. Hi Mate Where in N Devon are you, I'm in Holsworthy, pm me you phone No, I have quite a lot of spare gear you may want to have a look at, for mackerel you don't need anything special basic rod, reel feathers and a couple of spinners. Regards Flynny
  19. What is gang probed ????????
  20. Bill, Chuggs A little stiff, I had a wetsuit, waterproof top and pfd on. stiff I couldn't move, I had to return and ditch the wetsuit top, as for the paddle mmmm, thought I would really struggle having paddled before but I got on fine with it, will probable do a cut'n'shut as per chuggs recommendation. I really enjoyed the day though. A couple of observations on my first time out:- The yak did not behave as I had thought when returning, on a couple of occasions I just couldn't stop the yak from veering sideways in the surf break despite digging the paddle in to correct the swing or paddling one side like hell. What's the best approach. Secondly it's a good idea if you capsize to get sea side of the yak not shore side, cos the next wave will put you in again. Thirdly, having gone in I would definately undo the paddle leash in the surf zone (It's a good job I took chuggs advice and ditched the gear) I practiced launching and returning for two hours, bleeding knackered on Sunday, what fun though Maybe the above is of use to any other newbies. Regards Flynny
  21. a bit off topic but, chuggs can you pm me with the supplier of your roof rack saddles, there were some clever mods and tricks I picked up on saturday. Great pics and great report Version 2 of the trolley is well underway. regards Flynny

  23. Hi Guys Great to meet up again, no I didn't drown or was the car nicked. I decided after paddling aimlessly around for a while to try one or two launches and landings in the surf, got a bit of a dunking once or twice. The confidence grew and grew so I decided to return and pick up some fishing gear, as I got closer to the shore the beach had disappeared at high tide:o, all of a sudden I got picked up by by a roller it was either another dunking or hit run close to the rocks, so I got wet again, the surf was so close it was difficult to re-launch so I packed up and nipped to the chandler for a few bits and pieces. Seriously I really enjoyed the day the weather was great and I couldn't have asked for a better initiation. I feel very comfortable with the Tarpon.Shame about the ending by all accounts, but it was good that most caught fish, my turn next time. I'm off to redesign the trolley after it collapsed in the road. Once again thanks guys for all the help and advice. Until next time Regards Flynny
  24. Thats it North or South sands for 8.30ish, cheers for the offer Nick will ring when I get close. Regards Flynny
