  1. I read in one of the fishing magazines that chopped red mags are a deadly groundbait to fish over on a pole, cupped into position with a few bits or corn or other baits they are supposed to be a great attractor. Not being a great pole fisherman (or any other kind of fisherman) and only possessing an 11 m pole, this would not work on the canal I usually fish as it would not reach the far shelf and would be lost in the mid channel. What about blending down some maggots and mixing them into a conventional groundbait mix, colour would be there, good dispersal if you use the right base. I have tried it before with some left over uncooked liver, that seemed to work very well the small is very strong. Anybody got any thoughts or experiences?
  2. Just bought a Drennan Stillwater medium feeder, comes with 3 glass tips and a swing tip section for those tighter swims, not being a carper it will cover anything I want to do short of rivers and the heavier section quiver or swing tip will cope with them if not to fast
  3. I think most of the GUC is open all year, certainly the areas my club (MKAA) controls are. Fishing is starting to pick up as well, especially for silver fish. Trouble is too many boats on it, whoever allowed canal boats on to the canal needs to be used as bait
  4. They do similar ones in ASDA for about £8 or £5 for the junior ones, including a bag that can be worn over shoulder. Armless fishing chairs can be boughht from Argos, Giant is the make, fold up, extendable feet, quite light, about £25. I've got one and am very happy with it, I weigh nigh on 17 stone and am 6'4" it's comforatble for me
  5. Newt, just general pleasure fishing, not into carping or piking, and tend not to match fish, if it swims, I will try and catch it, but only if it's passing by.
  6. Robb, I have yet to fish it, but like the look of it, please let me know how you get on
  7. Are we talking about the pike or the french, if it is the French, well they eat Pike, If it is the pike, will they eat the French and do us all a favour?
  8. Will be on the GUC on Saturday, see what I can find and then down near Wycombe Monday with a mate who is taking me to a lake belonging to a new club he has just joined
  9. New to MK and looking for posible fishing buddies in the area
  10. [if I know where I am going and what I am fishing for, then it's a small hold all, with box of floats, and feeders, reel, unhooking mat,or a set of winders, rod or pole, plus for both landing net and telehandle chair and if i remember some bait.
  11. There were a pair of ducks in my swim, must be the mating season, other males kept coming in and all hell broke loose, the resident spent most of his time with his beak clamped around the neck any other males that came close. Probably why the fishing was rubbish, the fish went elsewhere for a quiet time
  12. They were very small squats if they were about 1/4 inch long
  13. Looked good when I went out, then things just bad, someone was fishing the swim I had been groundbaiting all week (he must have been spying on me, because it's not that popular). Chose another stretch, I caught a copuple of perch that one day might be called decent and a half decent roach, the guy in the swim next door was pulling in fish after fish, wasn't even groundbaiting other than a few mini maggots every now and then. Frustrating, if I didn't just love being outside and fishing, I would pack it up and take up something I have more control over, like rugby.
  14. I was fishing today and i noticed that the guy fishing in the next swim, was using a very small form of maggot, much less than half the size of a pinkie or similar, unfortunately, he was Spanish, and his English did not run to giving me the Englsih name, any one got any ideas what they are called and if they are readily available. They were working very well with his pole and a size 24 hook
  15. Don't know the song, but it was on a 78, i'm sure of that
  16. Don't forget that a lot of still waters, lakes canals and the like are open all year, only rivers have the enforced closed season. Find out from your local angling club what waters are open all year in your area.

If you think this is pasionate or unpleasant, try the scrumV rugby forum on the BBC's website, makes this look like a Saturday afternoon tea party
  18. You can get a reasonable pole from dragonmatchdirect incuding roller and 5 rigs for £50.00 see my earlier thread on pole fishing. Dragon Match messed up with my credit card and that delayed delivery, as a result they threw in a pair of gloves and a a beanie from their Kinnetic range as freebies, just for being 3 days late with the delivery, not a bad deel as I couldn't fish over the weekend they missed anyway. If your unsure of pole fishing, try reading Bob Nudds "Pole Fishing" it only cost £6.00 from Amazon, very instructive, lots of pictures and diagrams make it easy to understand
  19. I have a couple of Avanti Tigra Match Reel 3000 reels from dragon Carp, good reels, near perfect balance but a bit on the large side for match fishing in my opinion, I have large hands and struggle to reach the spool with my finger as it is set so far forward of the reel seat.
  20. Asked around teh tackle shops in MK, shop at Wolverton doesn't stock them but will get one and fit it for me, about £2.50, plus the fitting charge, can't be bad.
  21. The shop in Jamaca Road has gone I think, I was fishing Canada Water and Greenland Dock up until Christmas last year. Greenland still has masses of bream, getting big now. All under Rotherhythe Angling Club now. Decathalon have a decent angling section at Canada Water and have been great in sponsoring matches, especially giving away tackle as prizes for the junior sections. Senior prizes would be a few bits and pieces, junior prizes would be rods and reels. Canada Water has a pair of massive carp, as yet uncaught, in recent times anyway, they can be seen around the shallows and must be 40lb plus, plenty of specialists have tried for them but they are too wary. They live in the waters to the far side of the fishing grounds ( wild bird sanctuary) and only seem to patrol the fished area. Some one will get lucky one day as they have been known to take surface bread thrown in for the ducks. Abainst club rules to fish it though due to the birds. Plenty of perch 3lb plus, roach and rudd over 2lb. Couple of very large cats in there as well, no one knows how biig they are.
  22. I bought a Hyperloop Barbel late last year, it has an Avon tip, expecting it to have the screw fitting. Unfortunately it doesn't, teach me to go down the local tackle shop and have a look first rather than buy over the internet
  23. I s'pose the cut off end of a pole (from the elastication) would work in a similar manner
  24. I have an Avon style rod that these days has a screw type end fitting, was hoping to just change the ring. Alternatively I have a lovely old 11ft split cane rod, I thought I might convert that instead.
  25. A woman goes into Harrods to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get, so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. The Harrods salesman is standing there, wearing dark shades. She says, "Excuse me. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?" He says, "Madam, I'm completely blind; but, if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound it makes." She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-lb.Test line. It's a good all around combination, and it's on sale this week for £44." She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!" As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh, that sounds like a Visa card," he says. As the lady bends down to pick up the card, she accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed but then realises there is no way the blind salesman could tell it was she who had farted. The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be £58.50 please." The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me it was on sale for £44. How did you get to £58.50?" He replies, "Yes Madam, the rod and reel are £44, but the Duck Caller is £11 and the Fish Bait is £3.50." two fish in a tank one says to the other ”how the hell do you drive this thing”
