Hi Roly, The fact that he's asking the question, makes me think that he hasn't got lots of experience himself. Carrying 2 anchors with their associated reels and deploying them (bearing in mind most yaks only have one clam cleat fitted to secure the warp) doesn't sound like a great idea. I think he's after conger!

I'd anchor well uptide of where you want to fish. You can drift your float, or ledgered bait (use a lighter lead) into the area you want to get to. Use a longer anchor warp which will help hold bottom, it'll also give you more scope for paddling back against the tide. I don't know the area (as Mark says) either, if in doubt don't bother!

Definitely a motor home by the sounds of it! Us peasants aspire to such luxuries (Sorry just off to stoke the fire under the still, oh & swap that bit of corn in me mouth!) Just puzzled why you'd leave home - a visit to the Scillies is another aspiration!

Hi Lyn, One of the reasons we were there was because of the snorkeling. My girlfriend & me were planning on taking the yak round to some secluded bays, as we did over the last couple of years around that area. The dive centre do a lot of dives straight off the beach, which gives you an idea of the potential. We found a great spot just round to the right from Porth Houstock bay, mullet, bass, pollack, loads of wrasse, sandeels, gar fish, all to be seen against a beautiful rocky/seaweedy backdrop - bloody cold though! Take your wetsuit, and hoody thing and gloves (and wear socks with your fins!) But the weather wasn't with us. I snorkelled a couple of times, water a bit cloudy the first time, but still enjoyable. Apart from coming across a guy in a camoflaged wet suit hiding behind a rock, floating motionless, with a spear gun! Fishing is off the rocks from Porth Kerris either side, free parking at Porth Houstock, with 24hr toilets on the beach.

Set off in the rain a couple of weeks ago for Cornwall, after watching in dismay the weather forecasts & wondering whether we should have booked a week in Greece! : Had to take the Malibu as the Prowler don't fit in the camper yet. Didn't get off to a great start, as arrived after 9hrs of driving on the Roseland only to get stuck on a camping pitch in the driving rain skiddin all over the place. When we left after a couple of nights found the clutch had gone, so made an unscheduled stopover in Truro for 2 nights where it was fixed (Cath's dad lives there thankfully - only had to pay £420 for the clutch! :). Anyway, made it down to Porth Kerris, dive center on the Lizard, just round from Porth Houstock/Manacles, £8 a night right on the beach, £1 for showers. Recommend it, the showers/toilets are a bit naff, but it's cheap! Packet of sandeels only a quid from the shop! ;D Kevin (Paintfly) turned up Thursday tea time, for the first launch, loverly night had loads of bass takes on my faithful friend surface popper - but only managed to hook one when it was nearly dark. Over the next week & a half was out nearly every day, always from Porth Kerris heading round to Porth Houstock (past "Pollack Corner" as Kevin named it! ;D) Only ever had sandeels or caught mackerel for bait. Mostly float fishing the sandeels, though had the bull huss on ledgered mackie. It was heaving with mackerel, caught one on a bare hook just dangling under the yak, had them attacking my float & on the surface popper. At one point had trouble getting the sandeel down to the pollack! ;D Tremendous fishing at times with a fish a cast. Had several bass, one to a sandeel the other 5 or 6ish on the surface popper, largest 4lb, but the last one, just short of 4lb gave the best fight! ;D Biggest of the endless pollack was 6lb, hell of a fight! Bull huss must have been in the region of 6-8lb. Anyway some pics.... The breakdown :-X Hotel Hill Billy and their view The Weather on the few none launch days (2 I think ) The fish! No flash...had bass right up to total darkness Lots of these critters.. Who's lookin at ya? The 6lber - doesn't do it justice Some nice surprises were seeing a lizard on the Lizard for the first time in 3 trips, seeing the dolphins, having this fella swim round me for a couple of hours (think it was a young 'un, or was it me giving it some sandeels?) Seeing these, Kev found a couple as well Finding out it was Kevs' birthday - a good excuse to crack the rum open! Spider crab, then big edible in the prawn trap! Discovering a moon eclipse! Finding out a rock from the beach works as an anchor - lost my anchor on the 3rd launch, worked great with the rock but prob cos it's so rocky round there. Eating fish every night & playing with fire! ;D Didn't do the conger justice. Me & Kevin went out one night to try for them, nothing doing, but the weather (which was forecast clear) turned foul, driving rain again. On the last night I stayed out till midnight, reeled in my one & only mack, to go back, to discover one on the end, it nicked my bait & that was that. The weather was ropey most of the time, otherwise it would've been a different story! Thanks to Kev for his company & running us to the shop! Also he paddled over to the Manacles, I lazily didn't bother . Great trip despite the weather, wish I had more time to figure out the bass movements in what's only 500yds-ish square area, I was getting takes in 40-50ft of water on the surface popper. Hi Glen, Can't help noticing that the bass you caught looks right small - how long was it? Did it meet the minimum standards? {admin note: unless you have reason to doubt the weight he stated on the opening post, this comment is uncalled for. GlennK has been with us a while and even with all the personal attacks we get on the conservation forum and occasionally on this one, him taking undersize fish and lying about it has not been mentioned before. I'm leaving the comment but I think it is out of order. I have to wonder if the problem is that a regular on the sea and conservation forums posted a photo of a nice catch from a yak is the problem. Hi, the FF keeps sending "pulses" down & measuring the time it takes to get back, also it can tell the size cos the "pulses" are really fast (many, many times a second). This means you don't know which way it's coming from, how fast it's going or which way it's going to go. Some FF have side angle "pulses" so they detect things not directly under the transducer. You know it's down there! How deep, how big.....but not where it's going...

Yep it's a xxxxer, not sure I have an answer. When the unit is connected to the battery it'll cause electrolosys if there is any dampness. I've cut back cable and found corrosion going through all of it. I just try and make everything as water tight as possible. I haven't seen many complaints though on the forums about this, so it could be something I'm doing wrong - not sure. Did wonder if having a really good well charged battery (which I do) might make matters worse, more current/power causing more corrosion.

The green stuff is caused by electrolosys - I've got the same unit and have just had my 3rd (or is it 4th?) power cable delivered. At first I didn't put a switch inbetween the battery & unit and left the lot connected up, between launches - big mistake!! Then I put a switch in and turned it off after each trip - not much better (problems at the switch/fuse). After the last time I wired it I always took the battery out after each trip - lesson learnt!! I still think over time you'll get some corrosion - electrolsys only needs a bit of damp seawater moisture to occur. Hope that helps... BTW you can get conductive WD40 from Maplins - wasn't sure if the normal stuff is

Yep rag worm or sandeel. The bass I missed took a sandeel as I was reeling in.

I was about level or 50-100yds further out than the end of these rocks: Though anywhere round there seems to produce. I'd recommend moving if you're not catching. I've found just 20-30yds can make a difference, also cast your float about to find the gulleys. Tight lines!

Hi, Go to Porth Houstock on the Lizard, free parking and toilet on the beach. Paddle past the harbour/quarry wall on your right, and bear right. I found a spot in line with the track/road in the quarry area at right angles to the last "toothy" looking rock on as you look to the west. Anywhere around there seemed pretty good - made up of gulleys I think. Conger after dark if you fancy it, lost the biggest bass I ever hooked there too If I lived as close as you I'd be down there every chance I got

Just a quick aside. I bought some Berkley holders, cheap. I did a quick test to see if the scotty extension bar fitted & it seemed too. So got one, but it doesn't lock properly & the slightest pressure makes it rotate. Which makes it pretty useless. So will have to replace base part with scotty one....

No mate, off the yak in Coverack bay. So predictable - put your bait down for 15mins then wait for the bottom to move!

Then hooked something very big, battled for about 20mins ish, like being hooked to the bottom - but it was moving!! Finally broke me (didn't have the tope reel on!) Last cast back on the harbour wall in Porthleven - some biggish 3 bearded rockling in a gale!! Pics of the sunset & the pub opposite where morris dancers serenaded us away back up north!!

Just got back from lurverly Corwall, (wish it was west wales! : ) Spent the first night in Porthleven - the surf was up, great view from the hotel room.. Then on to the Lizard (Mullion) for a week.. It was a family outing my parents 2 brothers & associated wives & kids. First trip out of Mullion was with my youngest bro - he managed a mackie, after I took him back I had a pollack.. BBQ'd Out on my own at Porthoustock - monster wrasse & a couple of pollack.. Out with the middle bro at Porthoustock - probably the funniest thing happened. We were sat minding our own business, when a trawler broadsided (30ft away), some hairy arsed cornish fisherman was takin photo's of us sayin "I've seen everything now, you MUST be hungry" Did he think we were hill billies?? ;D Anyway, more wrasse & more pollack best about 5lb!! BBQ'd! Definately the best day - though I had a deeply disturbing experience on the last cast. Reeling in a sandeel - got a big hit by something (I thought pollack), only to see a flash of silver a foot down near the yak. That's when I started praying etc and took it much to easy.... :-X, saw it rolling with the hook in the crook of it's mouth 7-8lb bass!! Before it slipped off just before the final landing ooch! Went back to the same place next 2 days - no joy & weather worsening! Apart from the wrasse & a couple more pollack! ;D Trip out of Porthoustock with me dad was cold wet windy & blanked. Last launch was at Coverack, in the bay. Struggled to get out as the winds were gale force, it calmed down later. Got this to the boat..
