if it prevents idiots from buying a knife and killing or injuring even one person then so be it

The point is that won't stop a single thing.

strange when its forbidden to buy a ordinary knife you can get ones "designed" to kill

i can't see why a collector would buy a fake sword in the first place :schmoll:

what do "martial" artists train with edged weapons for? who do they expect to bump into and why would they be carrying their sword for in everyday life "just in case" doesnt come into it and a reason (excuse) got rid of in the 60'sfor most knives.

and num-chucks i believe are illegal anyway

Nunchukus aren't illegal as they are used by legitimate martial artists(and to be honest are so easy to make banning their sale would be pointless) a collector wouldn't buy a fake sword but a member of a re-enactment society would, plus not all martial artists who take part in "cutting contests" can afford a traditionally made japanese sword(whose prices can run into many thousands of pounds) but can afford a traditionally hand made sword made outside of japan see here last legend. I believe a lot of Iaido practioners use alloy bladed swords as they are lighter and not being sharp are more safely used in practice(I'm sure the resident martial artists on here can correct me if i'm wrong and add they're own comments).

i think its illegal to sell them though? ,i belive the law says you can only carry them legally is between a place of training and your home ,shops i believe are neither ;)

same goes for everything if its illegal to posses them in public (other than training and home) then shops selling them are doing it illegally they are aiding and abetting you to carry them from shop to home ,your reason for having them on you is outside of the rules thus your acting illegaly and the seller (even a private seller) is breaking the law.

I just had a whizz through the legislation........

My Leatherman is illegal, it has a locking blade!

My chainsaw however, now that's a different matter................237_texas_chainsaw_massacre.gif

Your Leatherman is far from illegal, it's just illegal to carry it in a public place without good reason, which seems fair enough to me, if you haven't got good reason to carry something, leave it at home :)

If you were to start your chain saw and walk down the high street with it running, then the authorities might have a problem with that!

No its not illegal to sell them and its not illegal to transport them from the place at which you bought them to your home otherwise anyone buying any fixed bladed kitchen knife would fall into the same trap

Wouldn't it be far easier to lock any B*****d up who has/is carrying a knife with the intention of using it on another person.

A 20 year stretch would soon have an effect on even some of the brain dead..

Unfortunately this won't happen as some bleeding harts out there would complain it is against there human rights to be banged up for that long.

I see your point with the Leatherman but what is 'without good reason'? For the past 10 years I've been carrying it on my belt all day every day. At work, shooting or fishing no problem, if I'm sat in the pub and the arm on my wife's glasses come loose then I use the Leatherman to tighten the screw, the bottle opener has been used by the landlord more times than I care to remember to remove lost rubber seals from optics in the necks of spirits bottles, pliers for removing thorns from dog paws, the file for smoothing broken nails (and the scissors)....the list is endless.

As you say I can't legally carry it in a public place without good reason. The problem is good reasons come up unexpectedly every day. They call it a multi-tool 'with good reason'. It was bought as a tool and that is how it is used. I could leave it at home but then why have one? I have files, saws, knives, scissors, screwdrivers, pliers and bottle openers at home already. The Leatherman is convenient, very useful but illegal because of the locking spring... a safety device to stop the blade closing whilst in use!

The point really is that everybody contributing to this thread abhors the use of unnecessary violence and criminals stabbing and shooting people with anything they can use. Making slightly sharp things illegal won't stop that and inconveniences many more law-abiding folk.

I was in the cubs as a young boy, the motto... 'Be prepared' I am, but now I'm a law breaker. Akela would turn in her grave!
