Method Feeder

Its modern use began I think on the match scene with the Carp puddles around 10yrs ago.

As to who, no idea.

Its one of those - nothing new under the sun - methods. I remember seeing a South African Carp rig that was dated in the 60's, that was a method rig in all but name.

I think the Americans have had a very similar set-up for years now. Doughballs come to mind for some reason, perhaps Newt or Phone can throw some light on it.

The "methods" of a method system are old as US angling. A firm doughball is the primary bait which is placed on the hook. Around this primary bait is a double handful of bait that quickly washes off of the primary bait into a pile leaving the primary bait, the doughball, exposed. The added weight of the "packbait" around the doughball is also useful for casting distance.

It is still my preferred "method" in many instances where the margins are non productive and I must fish at distance. I always freeline or occasionally use a piece of shot and popup the doughball in the pile of packbait. Of course this can also be accomplished with cracked corn and a slight bit of binder and a couple of kernels of corn for hookbait. Many variations are possible but I don't know who began promoting/manufacturing the "method" feeder in the UK.

The Method was designed by Matchman Dave Hough for bagging up on Mallory Park, Leicestshire.

This was then taken further by former England International Roy Marlow and it's his feeders that the feeders in the shops today are based on.

Les, found this whilst browsing, no dates but thought you might be interested.

To be honest I first saw a carp angler 30 years ago moulding paste around his sinker. I've seen really old images of asian rigs that are very similar to method rigs only using multiple bare hooks embedded in a paste ball(60 years old?)

very few new ideas, just variations and improvements on a theme.

Very true Singy,

Just have a look at some of the bait recipes from hundreds of years ago!!

Even the sacred bolt rig with exposed hook cannot claim complete originality.

There's an interesting chapter in "Successful Angling" by Walker, Taylor, Falkus & Buller entitled "Nothing New in Fishing". For instance did you know the swimfeeder was mentioned in print by Nicholas Cox in "The Gentleman's Recreation" which was published in ....... 1674!
