We often get asked about the Zig Rig.

Gaffer has put it into words and pictures here:

The usual masterful Gaffer job.

A question though. Since a long prepared rig would certainly be a mess to cast, how about a hooklength of a foot or two to a swivel and a sliding weight on the main line with a stop small enough to pass thru the rings on a cast up the mainline? The weight would need to be heavy enough to give a bolt effect so maybe 3oz minimum.

If your hooklength is lighter than the main line (always a good idea IMO) I can't see any real risk since the worst case (bottom with sharp objects and a damaged mainline) is a mainline break but the weight would slip right off. More often you'd break off at the hooklength below the swivel and then you are talking about the fish having only a hook and a foot or two of line to deal with.

I keep on saying this but it's worth repeating: try a Zyg rig in winter. If I fish worms or deadbaits for perch on the bottom in winter I rarely catch carp. However, it's a different matter in midwater.......
