Hi all you Carpers,

Was speaking to my mate yesterday with regards to getting 10kilos of CSL pellets.Having checked all the mags for different companies, prices etc etc they are a tad expensive. Now I'm no cheapskate, but if i can get it cheaper ,or an alternative is available thenI'll use it.Have read that Ewe nuts are basically(if not exactly) the same.Is this true?, and can CSL be bought in liquid form as well from Animal feed shops.Cheers in advance for all the replies....Des,and on behalf of my mate Des.

( some-one once asked me if every-one in Ireland was called Des)!!!!!! :D:D:D

Piker,

Short answer...yes!

Not sure whether you can get csl liquid at an animal feed shop, but I've boiled Mendip Ewe nuts & ended up with a lovely dark liquid that comes pretty close.

Hate to spoil the post for you, but I have to say I didn't think they were much use, I've had better responses from the usual seeds, pellets & groundbait mixes.

Now liquid Molasses.

Peter.

Ditto, I've found that the cheaper Ewe nuts do work, but they aren't as effective.

I have the odd 15kg of Ewe Nuts as well. Trouble is that for one reason or other my fishing has moved away from using them so can't really tell you how effective they are. Come the closed season I'll do a bit more carping and get a better idea.

The thing I am on the look out for is CSL at a reasonable price. I just do not seem able to source it. If I want a tanker load no problem but try getting under 10 litres !

Any ideas ?

Cheers

Got a few kilos off Haiths with a consignment of other stuff a couple of months back. A few of The "Hardened Carpers" over here said that CSL pellets are sh1te.

I`ll take their advice and get Trouties next time.

Try the Haiths website, it`s good. Postage is very reasonable to Ireland. Great selection.

Piker,

As an Animal Nutritionist and Feed Specialist I'll give you the definitive answer. CSL Pellets are a foodstuff that doesn't contain any additives, growth promoters or unsuitable supplements. They are more or less a straight foodstuff that is derived from the maize plant (after undergoing several extraction processes) whereas Ewe nuts/Sheep nuts etc are specifically designed products that have minerals, trace elements and many cheap fillers added to them to be suitable for feeding to Sheep (ruminants). Ruminants have 4 stomachs and can digest poorer quality nutrients much easier than fish who have a vastly different digestive system. Therefore because the digestibility of Ewe nuts and the like is not of a high enough standard and the fact that additives used in these feeds are possibly dangerous to fish, make no mistake that they should not be used for feeding to fish.

In reply to your CSL Liquid question, yes it is obtainable from animal feed suppliers-Did you find any suppliers??

Never got to the bottom of it I'm afraid.

Managed to get 10 litres from a farmer that was fantastic but alas the old boy past away before I could get more and the son folded the business.
