Boilies size question?

Recommended Posts

Alan, the answer is a lemon! On my local lake they have been caught on 22mm brown ones, 10mm fluor ones and just about every shade and colour and size in between, inc my own bright yellow ones.

All of these within the last 14 days.

Good luck with your quest though :D

It is a well known fact that carp will only take a boilie that is exactly 15.75mm. Anything else and you are wasting your time.

English as tuppence, changing yet changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss Havishambling, opsimath and eremite, feudal, still reactionary, Rawlinson End.

Not a question of admitting to using a particular colour Alan.

Its horses for courses and all that!

Different waters, different species, different sized fish in said water, and so on.

I'm off to France later today, and I'll be taking my own version of 'tutti frutti' (yellow), my own 'extra fishy' (red), 'NRG' (buff), 'M-tech' (browny-red) & 'Tock Specials' (lighter browny-red). But not forgetting of course, and after 30 minutes in the water they turn into a wishy-washy version of their original colours anyhow!

As for the average size - a lot of carpers will use, and much prefer, a smaller boilie - more like 14mm, doubling up on many occasions. Me - normally 18mm.

I normally use 16mm, sometimes 14mm. Most people where I fish use 16, 14, 12 or even 10. I'm not aware of many people using 18+ - but they have their advantages. If I could I would carry baits from 10 to 22mm but it just isn't practical. Bigger baits catapult & stick out further whereas smaller ones rest in weed etc a bit better and give more of a carpet affect. I also like to use chopped sausages but they don't catapult well and get stuck in boilie rockets.
