i need to identify two canal fish

ok so the first fish i have a picture for , can any body tell me wot this is, i cort it from a canal,

click the link above to view picture.

 

and the second is also from the same canal, but i dont have a picture, my friends call it a "daddy ruff"

but i cant find anything on the nest with that name, so ill describe it, it looks just like a perch, ecept no stripes, instead of stripes it has spots, and the fish it brown not green,

 

please can u help me , look forward to the replys, john

Ruffe? Lovely? You've obviously never had to remove the chewed up remains of one from a survey net after an eel has chewed it into spiky mush. 'orrible things.

"daddy ruff" but i cant find anything on the nest with that name

 

Could have been Roger the Lodger :rolleyes:

 

But seriously, Liggie=Bullhead=Miller's Thumb and Ruffe=Tommy=Pope are the two fish you had,

I've caught quite a few Ruffes on the broads

As Vagabond and the others have already said the first fish is a Bullhead or Miller's Thumb (Cottus gobio).

The second fish sounds like a Ruffe or Pope (Gymnocephalus cernuus)

Happiness is Fish shaped (it used to be woman shaped but the wife is getting on a bit now)

Ok thanks guys, according to some pages on google both these species are endangered. any body els heard this

 

 

I think to the arm-chair naturalist EVERY species is "endangered"

 

Get out there and observe and fish (as you have done) and you soon see a different story.

 

Ruffe aren't as common as they were, but look in the right habitats and there are millions of bullheads.
