CALLING OUT TO ANGLERS WHO NO HOW TO CATCH PIKE ON MAGGOTS

Chub Frenzy

Recommended Posts

A few points to add to my earlier post:

Firstly lures and fishbaits will normally be the best baits, but on waters like Chub Frenzy is fishing where they're not allowed worms are the next best thing I've tried. On odd days they can be the best offering even where there is no such ban.

Secondly, placing weights next to the eye of the hook isn't always the most effective rig. However it often is and is usually my starting point. It's also very easy to fish. The amount of weight depends on how quickly you want the worm to sink, and how far you've got to cast. The sink rate can often be critical though, and in general the deeper the water the more weight you're likely to need.

Finally, in weedy water you can reduce the risk of getting snagged up by not having the hook point exposed. To do this slide the worm up the line, turn the hook upside down and insert it inside the worm for a second time.

I have caught a few pike by accident on worms while fishing for bream and for perch so here is another vote for worms ;)

Also couldn't you use some imitation live/dead baits or even some stiff paste of some kind in the shape of a fish? I suppose anything is worth a try...

someone has pointed out swimfeeders

spray paint em silver and hand a size two or four super specialist on a wire trace near it

best feeders so far for me are the nisa ones with the teardrop weight folloed by the drennan open ended ones in the natural pike colour (yellowy green)

Yup worms are a great bait for pike - I had 8 or 9 last season whilst targetting perch - biggest just under 11lb!

I would hook a single lob once only in the top of the head - when you twitch it it will then look VERY much like a bootlace eel - perch AND pike find it irrestible!

Is that true? That might explain it, I've never caught a pike on worm anywhere near Oxford (where I live) but then I've also never seen or heard of a single eel anywhere near Oxford. The only times I've caught pike by accident is when using or retrieving small fish!
