Jeff - Fascinating, thanks! Just goes to show there's nothing new under the sun (even when I thought it dated back to 1914 in the first place)!

Hi there chesters1

All i can add at the moment is that the pot is post 1920 as that is when the backstamp

MADE IN ENGLAND came into effect.

I have seen the design before,i will try to obtain more info and post the results.

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

It's definitely not Moorcroft, they used tube lining, like cake icing, to outline and much of their work was floral.

It's also not Morland or Lorna Bailey of that I'm sure. Both would have backstamps. Neither is it Clarice Cliff, again it would have a backstamp.

I think it's a 1930 piece from a more minor manufacturer who was producing pieces according to the taste of the time. Grays Pottery is an example, but again there would be a backstamp. Any major pottery always mark their pieces.

However just because it has no backstamp, it does not mean it has no value. Often a piece will be acquired by a collector because it's typical of the era, which this piece is.

If you're interested in selling, then you could put it on e-Bay entitled 'Clarice Cliff style' or something similar and you might get some interest. Could be that someone recognises it.

As regards the use of the words 'Made in England' the following from Godden's Encyclopaedia of British Pottery may be of interest

"The adoption of certain rules to marks from 1891 (to comply with the American McKinley Tariff Act)...........it should be remembered that Made in England signifies a 20th century dating.
