Have got a couple of nice new rods recently & only quibble is the gloss varnish. In the past have revarnished rods in matt but is there an easier way to just take the worst of the shine off without having to re-do the whole thing?

Very fine steel wool or the finest grade of emery paper - applied gently.

I wouldn't worry about it.

How often do you fish in bright weather and super clear water and consistantly catch under your rod tip ?

Even it you're fishing just 10m away, the way that the water/air boundary refracts light makes ui unlikely that you'll ever spook a fish with rod flash.

You could also try rubbing with "jif" or similar.

Why not dull it with damp flour, rather than ruining the finish?? that'll take the shine off without ruining the finish and then it can wash off if you need to sell th rod.

Groundbait takes the shine off a rod.....try that and you can always wash it off. Plus it'll smell nice when you handle your rod, rather than 'human' smells.

 

My rods are always coated in the stuff.

Answer is "very" - I'm a mullet-head Ken :D

 

Besides I much prefer the look of a dull rod just for my own eyes.

Well has anyone tried these solutions & does any of them give a neat finish?

If you try Vagabond's wire wool tip use the very finest i.e. at least '0000' grade and be very gentle. The finish will be very clean if you are consistent. You may want to apply a little polish afterwards to darken the finish...............but don't buff it too hard or you'll have a shiny rod again!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
