My assistant at work has a husband who is an engineer. Every so often he is posted abroad; mainly Egypt, Jordan etc. Always brings me back 200 packs of Marlboro @ £8.00 per 200's. What is the tax on our fags? These fags retail at about £4.65 for 20 here as far as I know.

Alan Taylor:

There are "booze cruises" from Dover, used to be a quid return.

If anyboyds actually interested I know a place that enables you to actually get free tickets from dover to calais.

Does actually work, I got the same deal to get over to Ireland one time, and I got a few for the dover crossing as well.

People are actually illegally selling them on eBay

I think the price has crept up since the intro of the Euro (take note for when we get it!) ...they tend to be sold only in their TABACS (anyone know why that is)? ...

The price has crept up because in the last 18 months or so the French government has hiked up the tax on tobacco in order to try and persuade people to stop smoking. Nothing to do with euro related inflation.

You can only buy ciggies in from a

'tabac'in France because the sale of tobacco is a state run monoploly, as is the sale of newspapers, magazines and other periodicals. These can only be bought from a 'presse'. There are also no private bookmakers in France. You can only put a bet on or buy lottery tickets in a PMU (a bit like the Tote). Many bars will have a tabac and PMU licence so you can by fags and put a bet on a horse in the pub. You often find a presse close to a bar-tabac as well.

Hope this helps.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
