Match Aerial problem

Recommended Posts

I've just "won" a Match Aerial reel from eBay. When it arrived, it was in need of a bit of a clean, but spun reasonably well and the ratchet worked. I unscrewed the large silver screw and the small brass one from the backplate, expecting to be able to remove the drum.

It didn't budge, so I also unscrewed the tiny brass screw from the spindle at the front (illogical really), but I still couldn't remove the drum.

I replaced the 3 screws and now the wretched thing won't spin at all and the ratchet doesn't work!

I've moved the adjuster on one of the spokes from one extreme to the other and that doesn't make any difference.

I'm off to bed in a huff now, before I lob the whole thing through the window, but if anybody can give me any advice (other than to send the thing off to Mill Tackle, which I'll probably end up having to do), I'd be very grateful!

On the opposite spoke to the adjuster is a little wotsit which when pulled towards the outer edge of the reel will allow the spool to come off.

Well, between Alan's telephone advice, Rusty's photos, and my wife's logical brain (plumber's daughter, very handy), the reel is up and running again. I feel really silly now.

Anyway, thanks for all the help! Now, about that Wallis casting lesson, Chav... :)

Wasn't the full mechanics' expression "If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!" ?

Whilst on the subject, I, like Tincatinca have got a Specialist Tackle trotting reel given as a present some years ago by a guy who had to give up fishing due to an amputation bought on by diabetes. Like Tinca, I have noticed a small degree of wobble - although nothing like as severe as that on my Leeds. Any ideas as to how to resolve this... the Leeds is still under guarantee, so Dave Lewtham may have an unwanted parcel coming his way.
