Barbel, Lobworms and Sex.

 

I have never really thought about the sex of lobworms that I use for bait but I have been reading one of my old books on fishing written in 1904 called 'Angling In Rivers, Lakes & Sea by W.M.Gallichan' were the author states in a chapter about Barbel fishing using lobworms (page 66 for anyone with this old book) says :

 

"Select the females for the hook, ie., those worms without a knot to them near the tail. The males will serve as groundbait."

 

What great knowledge you could aquire for 1/- (a shilling, the cost of the book) in those days.

 

Has anyone else ever heard of this?. I will view the lobworm in a different light the next time I mount one on a hook. :D

There is no such thing as a male or female lobworm - they are hermaphrodites.

Thats what I thought, but thanks for confirming this. :)

Oh, I just bought a 1/4 kilo of lobs today to see if i can get a Perch while away Carping for the next few days. I was so looking forward to sexing my lobs tommorow :D

I'm starting to get a bit worried Dales.

First it was "cute" fish, now "sexing your lobs". :o Is that even legal???? :unsure:

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
