I have not used them often, but have used cockles alot more. Both baits I would fish on a hair rig and feed a few free samples in to the swim.

I have used them Tench quite often, i hair rig them and to make sure they stay on i use the elastic used by our sea fishermen to make sure it stays on, they are a bit fiddly to hair rig , especially if you want to cast them any distance.

just one more cast then I'am off home

micro wave them for 20 seconds then use direct on the hook with bait elastic to help hold them on ,

either ledgered or on the float there a good winter bait doubled up with hot peperami like a mini cocktail both give off a good scent so attract carp

quite well.

Dont forget you cant use freshwater Mussels (Swan Mussels) for bait despite them being quite good!

You could also use the following http://www.bristolangling.com/8529/Fox-Arma-Mesh.html

I haven't used this myself but was watching someone using it with prawns on a river for barbel, not only does it protect the bait but also stops it flying off on the cast and the fella using it says it's very affective.

Budgie, just out of interest, you say you can't use swan mussels,i've got to admit i've never heard of this, are they protected??

Yes mate Im pretty sure they are protected.Well as sure as I can be with my brain! Maybe someone else can confirm this?

My fuzzy brain agrees with Budgie, but that's not to say it's fact, I just seem to remember reading it. The EA will know and it's no doubt covered in their fishing byelaws somewhere - ditto crayfish, fish eggs etc.
