Personally, I'd say an accurate account of a potential record is important.
To whom?

The angler knows he has caught a good fish. Who else does he need to impress?

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

To whom?

The angler knows he has caught a good fish. Who else does he need to impress?

 

It's of scientific interest to know how big a fish can grow, if the recent Bream record of 22lb 9oz had been reported who would have thought that a fish that big could exist. I know many people are not interested or care what the biggest fish is, but for scientific reasons I think it is worth recording such an event unless it puts the fish in danger.

The report on P&P said that the fish was taken from a depth of 48` near the tower ,Does hauling them up from this depth bother the fish and do they go back ok?? curious face .

Some are now saying that the pics don`t look the size of fish stated and are hinting at a miss weigh ,.Have not seen the pics [in AT i believe] but we all know how pics can make a fish look both bigger and smaller to be continued.......

We are not putting it back it is a lump now put that curry down and go and get the scales

have I told you abouit the cruise control on my Volvo ,,,,,,,bla bla bla Barder rod has it come yet?? and don`t even start me on Chris Lythe :bleh::icecream:

Yes I think you are right, hauling them up from depth does play havoc with there swim bladders, but I remember watching a Matt Hayes program about Zander fishing in holland or Finland and they returned the fish by chucking them up in the air, so they went head first torpedo style back in to the water and they claimed this fixed the problem.

 

Have to admit I was not 100% convinced whether this works or not and were they just easing their conscience by assuming it did. But your point about hauling them up from depth and the other posts about bringing them to the bank to weigh does raise an issue.

 

If deep caught Zander need to go back quickly to sort out their swim bladder problems, then taking them all the way to the bank to record the details would most likely result in a fish death!

 

We seem to have a number of inter linking threads going on at the moment around size, PB's etc and they all seem to raise the same issues.

 

So if the swim bladder thing is true, and the quick torpedo return corrects this and you need to get them to the bank to weigh them. Should the angler risk the death of the fish to be able to claim the record :(

Does hauling them up from this depth bother the fish and do they go back ok??

 

It would be good to get some views on this from some of the Sea Anglers who probably experince this sort of thing more then most of us.

 

I know when I have fished over reefs on holiday, some of the Trigga fish have come in with blown swim bladders and it would be good to know if there is anything I could do to save the fish.

 

I am not about to fish deep reservoirs soon in the UK, but maybe one day I will get a chance and if there is a correct way to return deep water fresh water fish I would certainly like to know about it.

Would like to see a pic before I pass comment but if Mark has doubts then I very much doubt he is wrong.

 

Fish to the bank to get photographed/weighed well Ive seen some terrible fish handling due to this but it is common place on the TR's.

 

Accurate weighing in a boat? depends on lots of things really.

 

Zander with the bends! don't know as Ive never caught them in deep water but might be worth anyone fishing Grafham for preds to do a bit of research on the Dutch or US sites. It certainly can affect pike.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Some fish can come up from the depths and go back fine it all depends on the species, whiting and ling are notorious for popping their swim bladders or stomachs and some say that torpedoing them nose first back into the water goes some way to helping them survive and go back down, generally though I think very few make it once their bellys become distended
