I think it is a catfish from asia. Don't know to much about it, but I went to a fish farm in Thailand back in June and was told that they exported to a number of european countries under a number of different names and mentioned the name cobbla. Oddly I could not make out which one of the catfish they were as the stock ponds were full of mixed cats and to be honest my mind was wondering to whether I could get away with using my secret pen rod in the farm with out getting caught.

So I am not sure if it was one species of Cat or just a generic term to cover all catfish meat.

Loads of horror stories about them being reared in rather nasty conditions and injected with urine?!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I'm kind of glad I don't eat fish now!

I just did a bit of searching and found this comment on the BBC website:

Some discussion about it on Jamie Oliver's website:

And I'm sure I've read this article before from a link on AN (but didn't put two and two together):

Did you read Tracy's comment on the Jamie Oliver forum?

I was very excited today when a friend told me that they sell Vietnamese cobbler fish at Tesco(although I prefer to avoid supermarkets) but as I have travelled Vietnam and soon to return it was of interest.I tried razor clam this week and recently ate a pate made from my sisters placenta and am on a mission to eat anything I have never experienced before (within reason) after reading an article on said fish tonight I think I will decline the cobbler fish as it seems to be a replacement for the supermarkets cheap & unethical produce since our great UK chefs have educated the nation on how they raise our chickens e.t.c The cobbler fish, appart for having massive carbon footprints, being farmed in the most toxic river in the world is also allegiedly injected with the rehydrated urine of pregnant women to make them grow quicker & produce more eggs.Google Vietnamese cobbler fish & look for link why-you-should-not-eat -this-fish to read the full article that put me off consuming this fish earlier & make your own choices.

I'm glad I haven't been invited to her place for dinner!

Now I know we live in a very liberal and open society these days but howay man what are you doing looking in on a Jamie Oliver forum, you do know that any street cred you once had has been blown out of the window, pukka

Elton posted it I just did my duty and read the links, honest injun. If I'd known it was going to lead to tales of cannibalism I'd have joined the Angling Times forum and banned filters on carp :P

WE have a cobbler here that frequents the tidal parts of rivers and the ocean. It is a member of the catfish family and carries a very painful sting. However, it is a very tasty fish, though getting rarer these days. I have an idea that it might be protected in Western Australia.
