I know there are no Cyprinus carpio ("European" or common carp) in the peninsula section of Florida although I've never found anyone who can come up with a reason. However, I had heard the panhandle section where we are living did have them.

 

I was in a tackle shop buying some lobs & crickets to try for bluegills tomorrow and I asked if there were any decent carp in the local lakes. The owner looked around at several other customers and asked, "anybody know what a carp is or if we got any around here?"

 

No one even knew what they were.

Thats very weird, even if Carp were not in the area you would have thought that tackle shop staff would have a good general knowledge of fish in general.

 

It was not one of those odd local shops for local people was it?

 

But then again maybe there are monster Carp in the area and they are all playing dumb to keep the fishing to themselves :D

It is a smallish shop that probably gets mostly local trade and I'm not sure any of them had ever been more than a few miles away from home now that you mention it. Hmmmmm

 

I doubt if any of the locals ever fish for anything that does not have a diet consisting of other critters (fish, birds, small mammals) and while I had heard of carp when I was growing up, I was firmly convinced it was not possible to catch them on rod & reel since they were not in the habit of taking lures and I'd never seen anyone hook a carp while fishing.

I'd want proof first Andrew, I've heard it before.

A couple of years ago I visited a lake I hadn't fished since I was in my teens. When I asked (before paying my day ticket money), the guy actually apologised because there were so few carp in the water! :blink: "That will do for me" I said. First hour or so OK, a couple of tench, a few nice roach, rudd and perch. Then in the next couple of hours, 6 carp landed and 2 lost, and I packed up and left. The buggers seem to follow me everywhere. :angry:

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
