Ideas for a entry level centre pin reel

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I have just started fishing again after a 15 year break and have been fishing with mixed results using a avon style rod and fixed spool reel for Chub, Roach etc on local small rivers.

Anglers I have met mentioned my fishing could be improved with a centre pin reel. Does anyone have any reccomendations for a entry level reel for some one new to usign this style of reel? There seems to be lots on the market!

The okuma range are well worth you taking a look at.

if you are unsure about using one (as i am) you can pick up the same one i did for aroung £15, just put line on mine and had a play with it and it seems sound for the price!

Viney, I'd wait until your sure/proficient at using one before you write a review of it. :)

Mark, if you’re doing ok with a fixed spool reel then using a centrepin won’t suddenly improve results.

There’s been many posts on here about whether a ’pin is really better for trotting but in a nutshell the advantages are that a centrepin allows better/smoother control of the trotting speed and simpler setting of the hook and playing of the fish when you get a bite (you don’t have to contend with a bail arm).

The cons are that casting is not as straightforward, on a windy day they can be a right pain and [arguably] they’re only better when trotting inline with your rod tip.

I wouldn’t spend a fortune, if you want to try one then I’d follow Viney’s advice. If you get on with them though you'll be a lost cause.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

I'd beware the Shadowlanda reel. Although Viney sounds like he got a good one I was curious and got one and it is CR*P...Mind you, mine may just be a bad 'un.

Sound advice there from Rusty - try and borrow a reasonable spec reel like an Okuma or a Speedia and see how you get on with them. Many anglers - me included - returned to pins for the enjoyment of using them. They are an excellent tool for trotting - but do have their limitations as Rusty highlighted. And if you are in the market - don't forget the Anglersnet pin - a well made reel from one of our forum members.
