John wilson specialist rod

I recently purchased a wilson specialist rod, described as a barbel rod on the bay. It's 11ft 1 1/4 test 4-8lb lines and has a screw in tip for swing tips/quiver tips if desired. I know the avon quiver has the two tops but am curious if the specialist should have a seperate quiver section also or just the one avon top......I'd be gratefull for any help :)

The John Wilson range used to include the Heritage series which had maroon coloured blanks

and are very good rods.I managed to aquire the 13' specimen float which can handle lines up to 10lb and the 13' centrepin trotting rod which has additional rings but have yet get hold of one of the avons. Have not seen any from this range up for sale for a long time now.

No TT it's not that one bud, it's the old Ryobi masterline (green blank). It still has the plastic on the cork ...as new that was why i bought it. I haven't got it yet but have started to wonder if it should have a quiver section with it.

I have some older drennan specialist rods in 1 1/4lbb test and they just have the one avon top.

Not really powerful enough for barbel in fast flowing rivers but i do have one for chub fishing on rivers and tench and carp fishing on lakes. i have a 1.5 test curve barble rod made by DAM as well but have never used it. the jw avon rod is nice for float fishing on pits and i have caught double figure carp on it and i really like the feel of it i just think it may not have the back bone for barble in snaggy rivers

take a look at my blog

The green JW rod is the original avon rod. Yes it came with 2 tops. The quiver tip top had a fixed long white quiver tip.

The thing is, it says specialist on the blank and not avon quiver so I don't know if the specialist has the quiver section as well as the avon top.

I'm wondering if anyone on the board has one or has ever seen one and knows if it does/should have two top sections with it.

Hi I noticed that rod on ebay.

Last year I bought the same rod except mines branded masterline.

Ive been using mine recently for carp on floaters. Had plenty up to 12lbs. The rod has a nice through action that I like but I would'nt want to use it for the carp in summer when the snags grow back and the fish pull harder.

I would'nt have described it as an Avon or Barbel rod. It has a screw top eye for a swing tip which I have replaced on mine.

Ime sure it never came with two tips but was designed purely as a swing tip ledger rod.

I would sugest it is most suitable legering for Bream, large Roach, perch or small Carp and mid sized Tench.

Hey up Tigger the specialist version only ever had the one top The better known AQ had the two tops.

Question answered! :D

"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical

minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which

holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd

by the clean end"
