Shell Garages - this is the 21st century calling

Your lucky then Elton, I can't remember when I last saw free air in Southampton. If anyone knows of one please point me in the right direction.

I look at many companies soaring profits, then see what was always considered part of the service to customers and went on E-bay and bought a small compressor/tyre pump for under a fiver and try to only fill up at service stations that give free air. If its that bad around you I suggest getting your own air pump/compressor. I check my tyres weekly and I've had the tyre pump/compressor for over 4 years so it soon paid for itself...Be independent then you only need worry about the cheapest fuel selling place and for that there are a couple of organisations who tell you the cheapest in your area my wife uses them all the time and said she saved over £100 in the last couple of years.

Come on Elton, loosen those purse strings. What's 20p to pump your tires up when you're filling up an Evo with a tank of premium petrol? It seems a strange thing to feel economical about!

I feel a bit bad now. Send me your address and I'll pop 20p in the post for you ;)

What's all this about putting air in your tyres. I have had my Vitara for 4 years and hever once put any air in it. Should I be doing something. I did have it services last year and I guess they might have checked.

your havin a laugh surely ? check what the recommended psi is for your vehicles tyres then go to the air pump and see what it really is. its probably at about 15-20 psi. generally tyre pressure is around 35psi on cars like hatchbacks, saloons, estates.

ive noticed in my car if psi goes to 20 because i havnt checked in a while i noticed the car sticks to the road better with the recommended psi of 35 in each tyre

I'm with Elton. I bought a compressor that also does the airbed, kids footballs etc. Just plug and go, save money and energy. :D

No, I have never ever checked the tyre pressure. Think I may take a look at it this weekend, as I am little worried now.

Back in the 80s just about every filling station in Scotland had free air. When I left school I used to pump gas (this was before you filled your own tank), every car that came on to the forecourt got an oil check and had there windscreen washed when they came in for fuel.

The only place I see free air now is in France.

I remember reading of an American's trip to Japan where his car was given a windscreen wash, oil-check etc.

His initial thought was that 'I'm paying for all this' (in higher fuel prices).

Then he thought more about it and realised that here was a young man earning a living by doing something.

Back in the states there was another young man who used to clean windscreens and check oil, now on welfare benefits, and he was now paying through his taxes for him to do nothing, whilst losing out on the benefit of having his windscreen washed and oil-checked.

im not sure what the vitaras psi is but im sure it will be higher than 35psi, loss of pressure isnt always noticeable by looking at the tyre. you need to set the pump to what ever pressure your tyres can take then when you start pumping air in it will show how much is actually in it and will slowly increase as it fills them with air. check the air pump isnt set to bar when filling it up though

some woman stopped me in the filling station once asking how it worked she had it set to bar, cant remember the figure but it was really high. 35psi is 2.5 bar! so if you misread it be prepared for a bang!

Aha! wrong tyre pressure can cause excessive tyre wear, increased fuel costs, and poor adhesion to the road and/or a loss of traction. Just to mention a few of the potential problems. Should you be unlucky enough to get involved in an accident then the insurance company might try not to cover the claim by saying you have failed to maintain your vehicle properly a snotty policeman might also try that one on.
