Blame Dick Walker For Camo!

Britain's most famous 20th-century fisherman, Richard Walker, even dyed his handkerchiefs khaki. You don't want the trout alerted by the white flash as you wipe your nose

The report of the khaki handkerchief sparked this exchange of poetry in the Angling Times

Letter to AT from a Mr Barnes :-

As something white a carp may scare

Dick Walker dresses with great care

Camouflage – his hat, his clothes

A brown ‘kerchief to wipe his nose

Such dedication – yet

He lights – a snow-white cigarette !

Please don’t think my comments carping,

Or that unduly, I am harping,

On Walker’s inconsistency.

A man of Walker’s average bag

Needs something nobler than a fag.

How loudly might the cheers resound

"The Master’s topped the fifty pound"

As watched with wonder from afar,

We saw, unmoved by jolt nor jar.

The lengthening ash of his cigar.

Dick Walker’s reply :-

To reader Barnes, my thanks sincere,

For giving me this fine idea

Henceforth my fag can be abjured

Yet no mosquitos be endured !

Some years ago, a pipe I tried

My pocket it was put inside,

Whilst still alight, whilst carp I played.

Tho’ carp was landed, I, dismayed

Found that the unaccustomed heat

Was caused by flames around my seat.

The only way of quenching it

Was forthwith in the lake to sit,

And afterwards, when homeward bound,

I wore a cornsack, tied all round.

Experience, from which we learn,

How very painful ‘tis to burn,

How much it causes one to swear,

To have one’s bottom burned and bare,

To have to tie a sack around ‘er

For carp not even twenty pounder

Teaches us too, that fag so small

Can scarce be seen by fish at all.

But Barnes has shown, and shown full clear

(But not at equal cost I fear)

However good, there’s always better,

Indeed I’m Mr Barnes’s debtor.

Oh shan’t I be a proper snob

With big cigar stuffed in my gob !

A man of many talents - and BTW the story of setting fire to his trousers with a lighted pipe is quite true!

An alternative may be to start taking snuff. The last bloke I knew who did this found his white hankies very quickly turned brown, which faded upon washing to a reasonable approximation of khaki.

Hope this helps.
