When is the best time to fish?

 

Both are good, but it can vary from venue to venue and species you are after. But as a general comment I find dusk better at this time of year then dawn, but that is a general comment.

Going off experience i would agree with dales. Depends on the species and venue but I would say dusk.

Well maybe I am just a poor angler (more than likely)

But I regularly get up at silly oclock to fish at first light and stay on till ime cold and cant see my float or tip any more.

 

Except when surface fishing for carp I have found these times to be the least productive.

 

Maybe I am just cold or tired and that affects my performance.

I always go for the early start and stay until late to get the most from the day and find dawn good in Spring & Summer but often not as good in Autumn & Winter but still make the effort to get up early to get as many hours in as possible. Although I do think its worth being up for first light for Winter Pike fishing. But to be honest whether certain times are good or bad I still want to be fishing at dawn and dusk to get every extra bit of time on the bank from a day allocated to fishing.

I suspect that it is just venue dependent in particular when fishing still waters. When I used to do a lot of carping I definetly noticed a significant increase in the amount I would catch as dusk approached. I have also found that the bream, tench and roach would be more abundant in the mornings. On the river however I would certainly say dusk has been by far the best time to be there (for the larger specimens anyway). After spending many full days there I can say this for certain on the stretch I fish.

I agree with that but have a personal preference between the two for the evening after everything has warmed up a little.

 

But don't get up early and fish from 12 till dusk it's just as enjoyable and without the early rising...hehehe

It's almost impossible to give a useful answer really, because it depends so much on the water, your methods and the intended species - but in general they are both good times. The only way to find out which is best for your fishing, is to try them and see.

Leave house at some time in the dark, drive in the pouring rain for 2 hours, park up and wait till you can just about make out a silhouette and then get onto the water only to set up, cutting corners left, right and centre. Mournfully climb inside your bivvy and wonder why you didn't just stay in bed, moaning all the while about one thing or another. Fish till you can't be bothered anymore (usually about half 10 in the morning) and then put the alarms on at full volume. Fall asleep within arms reach of your rods, probably on top of your unhooking mate and a jaggy stone, even though you have a perfectly serviceable bed in the motor, which is less than 3 minutes walk away but seems like miles in waders. Assume embryo position for an undesignated period of time, until a random dog licks your face, after eating half of your stanky groundbait. Wake up feeling like you've had no sleep whatsoever, shout at dog, which seemingly has no discernible owner, wonder at the strength of the daylight and rub your eyes. What's going on? Realise you've already been fishing for 11 hours and still have 9 to go but hey-ho. Needs must. Have a cup of lukewarm coffee and a roll and half-cooked sausage, followed by a suitable roll-up. Scratch your arse and have a stretch. Reel in rods to find you have no bait. Put new bait on. Cast out and refresh groundbait. Start fishing properly. Catch some fish. Go home and promise yourself you'll 'sort your tackle in the morning'. Have stew and go to bed. Repeat the following week having learnt very little.

 

One day I'll write an angling book.... :)
