Fascinated by these fish, they look almost prehistoric. Found this picture of the Oklahoma state record (180lbs) Hoping Budgie sometime is going to tell us a little bit more about fishing for them.

I once read an article in (I think) Coarse

Fisherman on these fascinating creatures. I too

would like to hear a bit more about them.

I went to a Zander Anglers conference a couple of years ago. There was a facinating presentation and video show by some guys who'd been out to Texas to fish for them.

It seems the locals just throw a bait out, on a huge hook, tied with about 10' of rope attached to an empty chemical drum or other large plastic container (no rod). The pools they fish are about 8' deep. They leave the baits out over night, then go out in the morning and haul the fish out. Presumably the fish go on the table, or in a stew or something.

As far as these guys knew, they were the first to use rod and line and then return the fish. Setting the hook was hard, due to the bony mouth of the gar.

Agreed Graham, it does look very very sad...........but think of the fish it had eaten to get that big.
