With out knowing the size of the pool it's hard to comment but it could be due to the venue being over stocked. not sure you would have the same problems on a natural stocked water after all still waters all over the country freeze with out such major fish kills. So it sounds more like poor fishery management to me. I guess the EA should intervene as an emergency measure but they should look at ways to improve the situation long term to improve water quality and maybe reduce the stock numbers.

"Shallow pool" seems to be the problem, no doubt they'll have the same problem in hot weather, after all O2 concn. is higher during cold weather!

It's a park pool. That means huge numbers of waterfoul and people feeding them on bread which results in faeces and uneaten food on the bottom. Freeze over the surface and you very soon will get toxic levels of methane and carbon dioxide in tandem with plumeting oxygen levels.

As the situation is entirely man made, it makes sence to minimise the financial losses and maintain the amenity by breaking the ice and oxygenating.

So another pi44 poor managed fishery needs the EA to spend our money to bail it out.........................about time the EA used their "limited resources" a bit more efficiently me thinks,Why are people allowed to create (often with EA help) these potential fishery disasters and money pits in the first place?

Well dead or alive we wouldn't want 'locals' getting a taste for our Coarse fish would we?

Impossible mate, the new coarse C+R legislation now makes it impossible to steal fish without going immediately to jail
