Potential Record Bream not to be claimed 22lb 9oz

Not sure if this has been posted before and whether the Mail are just churning over old news, but they have an article with the chap who caught the potential Record Bream of 22lb 9oz from Ferry Lagoon in Cambridgeshire.

The chap Mark McKenna has decided not to put in a claim as it was caught be accident on tackle that he thought was totally inappropriate for Bream fishing, so in his opinoin deserves no credit as Bream are very easy to catch on modern Carp rigs and baits. I wish :D

He also lists all the abuse, nasty texts and phone calls he recieved as a reason not to claim it, which is a shame. So it looks like the record will stay at 19lb 10oz for the time being. I suppose in one way it is commendable not to claim it from a sporting point of view, but then it does make a bit of a mess of the record list by ignoring the biggest caught. The record list should be that a list of the biggest fish caught on rod and line whether intentional or by accident.

Exactly. It's a historical record, not a prize.

Spot on about it being an historical record and therefore it should have at least been submitted. The guy could have just requested to have his name left off if he felt that bad about it I am sure. Now in 20 years time people will never know that one had been caught if looking at the records alone.

I can see why many see it as a prize however. I am sure many of us would love to have claim to a record breaking fish. I certainly would. I wouldnt go out of my way to catch one but if it came along I wouldnt hide it no matter how I caught it. The simple fact that I threw my rig out there would mean I was fishing for the fish whether I wanted to catch it or not. I am not saying I would be proud about not catching it on a setup aimed at that species but it is a great thing to know you caught the largest recorded specimen of a fish.

What a shame. Whether anyone 'deserves' to catch a record is irrelevant, it was caught fair and square and should be recorded. The real shame though is the hassle the poor guy has had to put up with. I remember watching the little video interview he did after the capture and thought he was a really decent bloke. Unfortunately there are plenty of people about who can't just be happy for others.

Did anyone see the abuse Stuart Morgan received on Barbel Fishing World when he broke the record?

It was pure bile, just bitterness and jealousy and that fish was caught by design!

Thankfully, no. Pathetic isn't it.

Graham King took quite a fair bit of abuse when he went through a phase of catching a barbel known locally as 'The Traveller' from, I think Adams Mill, before it succumbed to what is thought was an attack by an otter.

It seemed to be that he was catching it at a weight increasing by an ounce at a time for a while over a few months.

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

I have heard rumours that bream over 20lb have been caught by carpers from other waters too, where publicity bans are in force. How true they are is anyone's guess, but I would say it's fairly likely. So I guess this fish just gets added to that pile. Bream over 20lb have also been found dead at more than one water in recent years, so it might not be too long before another claim is made.

Who knows, maybe Steve B will see his dream realised after all :)
