Tench tips

John Ellison:

I have great faith in SENSAS TANCHES. Put 10 balls in and go in over it. They'll come flying from all over the lake to get at it. Casters are my number one addition with caster and redworm on the hook. You'll not scare them in that depth.

Sensas tanches 3000 is great stuff. I would add liquadised sweetcorn to it for extra sweetness.

Its good to see people know what they are talking about. Tench fishing has come a long way and it is now one of my favourite species to catch. Follow everybodys tips and hints and you will catch a bag full!

I like to feed 50/50 expo and brown crumb as a groudbait in the summer with either casters, 4mm pellets, red maggots, chopped worm, sweetcorn, red strawberry sweetcorn or riddled luncheon meat (various flavours).

I use these same baits on the hook.

I have found a big lump of bread flake can be an instant bait when arriving at a swim.

Last year we had loads of success using Dynamite meaty balls and 4mm pellets (come in a tin in some sort of smelly oil).

I always start early in the mornings in the margins during the summer months.

As the day gets brighter most fish move into deeper water or to features such as lillies.

In the early evening fish move back into the margins.

I have caught Tench this winter on single red maggot, caster and worm. These were usually mid afternoon on mild days when the water temp may have increased by a degree or so.

A great Autumn bait for Tench is squatts if you can get hold of them.

Prez,

Wise words mate, as you say, just get out there and do it and learn. Observation, experimentation and an open mind are they key. a bit like the forum, you have to recoqnise the posts that are just egotistic bullshite.

Another good approach (works for me) is to spend time at the lake not fishing, just looking, really looking and talk to the other anglers, again you need to filter out the crap, but after you process all the input you should get a reasonable picture.

P.S.there is quite a good tench thread maturing on the RMC site at the moment, who knows we may even force a Tench only forum.

More wise words. This applies to tench the same as other species. On gravel pits especially, tench have definite patrol routes and finding these can save much wasted fishing time. Sure it costs time to begin with, but it's soon repaid many times over.

I had a 4lb tench yesterday on single red maggot fished over a dark groudbait laced with a few casters.

I was the only angler to catch a tench allday.

There were loads of chub caught and a few slabs and roach.
