Gimp... what we would nowadays call a hooklink or trace. Made by twisting a combination of silk and/or steel/brass/copper wire.

 

Very soft and flexible but stops you getting bitten off by pike, but prone to rotting.

 

Used almost always for pike fishing, and certainly still being sold in the 1940's.
