Why not take-up lure-fishing then?! You'll catch almost as many species, probably a lot bigger sepcimens if you're lucky, and not a single maggot to be bought! Of course, getting a good selection of lures will cost you .....

Alan Taylor:

Hi Newt, at least you won't have to buy a disgorger, there are 2 in the post for you to field test

Thanks Alan. But dunno how much I'll need em. I rarely deep hook a fish these days and when I do it us usually a catfish that has swollowed the hook down to around it's tail and there is no part showing so I cut the line and hope for the best. You gotta remember I'm too far south for Pike or Zander. The only fish around here with teeth are bowfin and gar and I can't remember the last time I caught either one.

DG - spool up with 50 or 80 lb b/s spectra line and if you get snagged, you can pull loose with nothing worse than a set of hooks that will need changing.

PowerPro, for instance

50lb b/s = 12lb mono = .355mm

80lb b/s = 18lb mono = .43mm

Hi all,

I know how you all feel I have this thing about reels, I am a great beliver in only using one rod at a time. So why is it i cannot resist buying reels in pairs? I have no need of them I use a Swallow centre pin for a bulk of my fishing, but cannot stop myself from buying Shimano fixed spool reels. It is worse than a drug adiction.

True enough, Newt

although I tend to use 30 and 20 lb BS braid most of the time, 30 for sink & draw and 20 for lures.

And when you say Spectra which I thought was Allied Signals's TM, do you mean a braid based on Spectra like this?

DG - I did indeed mean a line made mostly or completely of Spectra which, as you noted, is a trademark name.

But braid doesn't fit either, exactly. PowerPro is a spectra line but not braided at all.

Newt,

Power Pro is not available on this side of the pond as yet. I get people to bring it back for me when they are visiting the States. I showed the last spool to my local tackle shop and he is going to import some. To say he was impressed is an understatement.
