Taymar Butane Blowlamps & that.

Greetings Gang :),

Seeing as I got 'some good advice' in response to my recent 'Yankee' screwdriver post, here's another question for the 'experts on the panel'.

For some time, a very long time in fact, there's been a Taymar 'plumbers blowlamp' knocking around the house & garage. The origins of the blowlamp has always intrigued me 'cos I don't ever remember buying it.

However, 'the torch bit' at the top & the butane canister are well worn & I can only assume that someone worked here at some point & left it behind?

Well, a couple of months ago the gas canister 'ran-out' & I thought all I had to do was go out & buy a 'Taymar 'butane refill. It couldn't be done as it appears that Taymar 'went' a long time ago & were taken over by, is it, 'Camping Gaz' or is it just plain 'Gaz'. You tell me.

I was under the impression that all makers gas cartridges were interchangeable, so I bought a combined 'butane/propane' canister from another reputable manufacturer. Not a good idea was that, when I fitted the replacement canister to the 'Taymar torch' it emptied itself in about 2 minutes flat!

I checked the 'Taymar top' & the neoprene gasket seems o.k. & I came to the conclusion that if one needs to replace the gas canister in a Taymar blowlamp try to obtain a replacement Taymar canister. I've tried to contact 'Gaz' or whoever to clarify the situation, but to date they have not responded. <_<

Please let me know what you think (i.e.) can one use ANY replacement canister on ANY blowlamp or is 'Taymar for Taymar' so to speak? Also, how long has the butane/propane option been available?

Regards,

H of The Blowlamp. :)

Hello Again HV,

God HV, you're going back in time now aren't you, paraffin blowlamps indeed. Folklore has it that old Henry VIII used one of those? I have two here somewhere, but the 'washers have gone' & I cannot get the pressure so to speak. <_<

1st stage cure to leaky seals, Vaseline

2nd, PTFE Tape (Gas).

3rd, dependant on material, soak them in brake fluid which will make a lot of rubber based materials expand but become brittle over time.

Then, on the basis of you cannot break something which is broken, make new seals from an old innertube.

or just buy them from ebay ,the hardest are the lead seals but even they are available .i must buy a set of pump washers things seen working get more than just pretty pictures on ebay .

the pump washers are pretty much universal and a rock hard one revitalised with water rarely last long
