What a Cracker!

Just come back from a couple of days working/fishing at Wingham! This morning's catch of 3 tench and a perch wasn't bad, but yesterday (Thursday) was a cracker!

I set up as usual the evening before and set the alarm for 4am (I don't fish at night, preferring to sleep. I don't want to be woken at 2am whatever the size of the fish!). So I was fishing by 4.15 a.m. and finally packed up at 10.15p.m.

I had one fish take almost 50 yards of line and fight every inch to the net. No, it wasn't the carp I expected. It was "just" a 3-04 perch! And two other 1lb+ perch fought like tench!

Talking of tench I had 9, best 7-09. Just the beginnings of spawn showing but still a fair old way to go. For the first time I'm catching the odd 4 pounder, and even a "three". It might put the average down, but bodes well for the future!

The first fish of the session was a fluke, but one I wouldn't mind repeating - a new Wingham record bream of 13-14. What's especially remarkable is that it's almost certainly not more than 11 years old, and possibly as young as 9!

Well done Steve, cracking good fish of three sorts.

Did you catch that bream where I told you I saw one rolling? The one I saw was certainly into double figures.

We'll be back soon!!

Great fishing Steve. Nice size fish also, are these typical at your place?

Would you let me fish if I promised not to use my SAFE feeder rig?

Just read through the web link, great place Steve.

Not far away. It was caught from the swim I was fishing last time, so could have been the same fish.

Up to this year the tench have averaged almost 7lbs. However this season for the first time I'm catching 4 pounders, which have almost certainly bred at Wingham.

The last trip was the only time this summer I've caught perch under 2lbs, and I don't think anyone caught a perch under a pound in the recent Fish-In.

Very few bream are caught at all, this being the first reported this season. Having said that hardly anyone has fished the water, let alone for bream. The bream were stocked in 1995 when most were fry. However there were a few 3 year fish around a pound and quarter. Steve Randles caught one at 10-01 on the Fish-In 3 years ago and Bruno read the scale, confirming it was then just 8 years old.

I run Wingham as a syndicate and there's a short waiting list at present. However there'll be another Forum Fish-In next year, probably June 8/9th.
